I assure you it's real, the coppers have been trolling my neighborhood looking for people who are partying/drinking It's got to do with the mourning of the King's GrandSon's death in Phangnga for 3 days the national flag will be flown at half-mast. 29th, 30th, and New Year's eve my experience in the past tells me that this will also mean bars are closed, but no one has been able to confirm this so far alcoholic beverages are still on sale in normal shops, but again the police are making sure no one is drinking outdoors or having parties, which to me would include bars I guess we will see The MIB sometimes take their good old time notifying publicans that they must close It could be as early as 6pm tonight when the bars start opening though

Thailand declares mourning period From correspondents in Bangkok December 28, 2004 THAILAND has declared three days of national mourning after the tsunamis that killed an estimated 2000 people in southern coastal regions. "All government buildings will fly the flag at halfmast until December 30 to mourn the dead, and the Government asks people to dress in black and all religions to hold services across the country," Government spokesman Jakrapob Penkiar said. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had asked Government agencies not to hold New Year celebrations, Mr Penkiar said "The Prime Minister himself will not attend the countdown in Chiang Mai on New Year's Eve as planned," he said. Mr Shinawatra has told Thailand the likely final death toll will be around 2000. The 934 confirmed dead on an interior ministry list included King Bhumibol Adulydej's grandson Bhumi Jensen, 21. Crown Prince Bhumi was the second son of the royal couple's eldest child, Princess Ubolratana. Agence France-Presse http://thailandnews.net/

Just got back from Tescos after reading all about the ban. Tesco's shelf stackers could hardly keep up with the Thais (OK, and me) panic buying alcohol. Real or not (and after all the people who've said it's going to happen, and the election coming up and the Thais seemingly believing it) I think if you ain't got the beers in by now it might be a touch dry for the next couple of days...if not, oh well, it'll keep. PS Without wanting to seem ingratiating or anything, quite right Krypto...
