what's the latest post-tsunami scene in bkk? i'd been planning a much anticipated next trip in jan, but it seems that the disaster might have cooled things off. sure, phuket and krabi are no-go areas, but how's business in nep and sc? other than the three-day mourning, is everything normal or are things subdued? any relaxation in the skin-baring rules in force since the apec conference? or is this the best time to visit when all the regular tourists now staying away? any advice (i don't want to seem insensitive, just don't want to time my vacation wrong) ?

Mr Alan
Everything is normal in BKK. I didn't even know about the mourning period until I read it on the forum a few minutes ago. There is no reason to delay a trip to LOS.

Even if one is planning a trip in late January or later to Phuket, I would still go ahead with the travel plans. Much of the island was totally unaffected.

IMHO the Thais, although they will sincerely mourn the death of those caught up in the tragic events in Southern Thailand, will very soon be back to their outward displays of smiling, sanook etc.

Generally they'll probably get back to their "normal" lives quicker than most other folk will, even though they have such terrible devestation to cope with including the loss of family n' friends, houses, livelyhood etc.

Cheers

Whisper
Hear hear, brother Brocher.
The Thais were back to their normal happy, smiling selves only minutes after the catastrophe on Sunday morning.
I was helping some people salvage the remains of their businesses from the water and they were even then joking about the damage to their property and livelihoods. Everything will be back to normal for most of them very soon.

By the way, Phuket is not a no-go zone (I can't speak for Krabi). Patong was still jumping and rocking last night, albeit in a reduced capacity.

I hope your shift key is repaired soon too, DeepThaid.

thanks, guys. good to know that things are fast returning to normal. my appreciation of the thais' happy outlook on life has just gone up a couple of notches further. will be back to the old haunts soon. let the countdown begin!

ps: don't mock my lack of shiftiness. nothing I say could be important enough to warrant capital letters
