I was just watching Prime Minister Thaksin on the news and he was saying we do not want any more help with the rescue operation, we can do it ourselves. I mean the nerve of that guy, how arrogent. No thanks mentioned or anything.

He probably means they don't need anymore people in the areas putting a strain on local services. Don't be so quick to judge. He will definitely thank eveyone officially when it's all over. And just because this is Thailand doesn't mean the Thai people can't fix this all up just as well as their farang counterparts.

watching CNN and BBC and searching the net since it happened (we have many relatives in Aceh) I was struck by how much better Phuket and area handled it - granted they less casualties than Sri Lanka.Indonesia etc but they had more than Malaysia: pictures of the dead being taken and posted on boards, hospital list of the injured posted: the total impression was that someone (who?) was in charge there. Sadly Aceh is total chaos (Jakarta Post announced that Government would take up to 2 weeks to issue passes for foreign aid workers to go there - but that seems to have been quietly dropped).

Since the thais have 7-8 million falangs to house, fed, transport, entertain every year they have developed an impressive organizational skill. On my TAT visits, I had airline tickets, hotel, taxi, special event, tour vouchers in my hand in about half an hour every time. God bless them, they will need all their skills to get through this one. Everyone who is able, please help financially and as soon as they are back on their feet, go visit Thailand and spend money!

The Nation paints a different picture: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2004/12/30/headlines/index.php?news=headlines_15928549.html Forensic experts in race against time Published on December 30, 2004 As corpses lined the streets yesterday and hundreds more were being recovered, forensic expert Dr Khunying Pornthip Rojanasuand and her team struggled to identify those who died after Sunday’s deadly tsunami. “We have a lot of tasks to do and not enough personnel to handle them. I need to do everything by myself – take pictures, load them into computers, make printouts and even fill the printer with ink,” she said. “Many of the staff are getting tired and somebody was crying because they were homesick and had never faced such a tragedy before. I have to console them like their mother.” Forensic experts from Britain offered assistance, and Pornthip said she would take as many as she could get since Thailand only has around 60 forensic experts. After four days, dead bodies are decomposing because the team did not have enough formalin preservative from the start. When the chemical finally arrived, they either lacked staff to inject the corpses or the bodies were too decayed, said Pornthip, who is deputy director of Forensic Science Institute. The team badly needs supplies of good body bags. They only have cloth bags at the moment to wrap the bodies in. “Cloth is useless in preventing disease,” she said. The medical equipment is not sufficient and the forensic team has to use alcohol in cuspidors and adapt inadequate common items for work, she added. She said she had asked agencies to erect a “cold tent” to delay decomposition of the corpses, but none of them had got the point. The government sent 20 refrigerated containers, but these were not enough to preserve bodies pending identification. The forensics team is required to collect DNA samples from the victims’ mouths to identify bodies before they decay. But since many of the corpses were in advance stages of decomposition, doctors took hair samples instead. She said hair samples were not good because they probably could not be matched with those of relatives since DNA samples have not been perfected. More than 10,000 DNA extracts would have to be sampled in laboratories, Pornthip said. Temperature, moisture and seawater speedily decays corpses and fear of disease is on the rise, but Pornthip insisted she would not allow unidentified bodies to be burned. She also slammed the lack of coordination among agencies in the operation. The government set up coordination centres in Phuket, rather than Phang Nga, where most of the deaths occurred. Another forensics team under the National Police Forensic Institute in Bangkok has the capacity to conduct 200 autopsies a day. The institute took bodies from the South and dispatched experts to Phuket and Phang Nga. Police Maj-General Wichit Samathiwat, director of the institute, ssid lack of personnel was the most pressing problem. Duangkamol Sathirawatanakul The Nation Phang Nga
