The Miss Universe Contest will be coming to Thailand and the finals are May 31st. Fortunately, I'll be out of there before the finals. If you want to get hotel rooms, book them now while you can. I expect full bookings at the 5 star lots and have already noticed a rise in prices for these days. Gyaos

Windfall seen for tourism

The Miss Universe pageant next month is expected to add about five billion baht to the tourism industry income in both direct and indirect ways, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
"It is an effective way to promote Thailand through more than one billion viewers from 171 countries around the globe who will view the show, " said TAT deputy governor Suraphon Svetasreni.
The two-hour show in Bangkok will be broadcast live by national networks such as the BBC and NBC in 80 countries.
The show also will include a brief presentation from Thailand, the host country, to allow viewers to know the country better.
"Generally, the contest ranks as the fourth most popular programme among viewers worldwide," Mr Suraphon said.
Activities will also be held in Phuket and Krabi, so viewers can see how the areas have recovered from the tsunami.
The TAT has received a budget of 260 million baht from the government to organise the event along with the private sector. The finals of the contest are on May 31 at Impact, Muang Thong Thani.
The agency estimates the event will draw about 1,600 media visitors and support staff from around the world, along with as many as 30,000 foreign tourists. It is expected that each of them would spend 4,000 baht a day during their stay. The contestants will be in Thailand for a month.
