Trying to clarify here: "will enforce all laws that ban alcohol on holidays and weekend". Sounds like this is already on the books, but not enforced (regularly). Y/N??? If arriving on a Sunday, this will be a pisser way to start off a LoS junket. BYO?

Hot on the heels of cigarettes, alcoholic beverages are the next “social evil” to be banned from points of purchase at retail outlets, according to a proposed act drafted by the Public Health Ministry’s alcohol consumption control committee.

Dr Narong Sahamethapat, deputy director-general of the Disease Control Department, said the Alcohol Consumption Control Act draft is awaiting a public hearing, which is expected to be finished next year.

“It is hoped the ban on alcohol displays will reduce alcohol consumption among youths,” he said.

The act will ban promotion of alcoholic drinks through electronic media, and sales near schools, temples and petrol stations.

The ban on advertisements for alcoholic products will be extended from the current period from 5am to 10pm, Narong said.

Bans on drinks sales will also be enforced on Sundays, which is considered a family day, and on days of religious and royal ceremonies.

He said attempts to control alcohol consumption would be harder to enforce than those for tobacco because Thailand has many more local drinks traders, while the state-run Thailand Tobacco Monopoly is the only local producer of tobacco.
