It seems little by little the screws of censorship and vises are being closed in Thailand. All in attempts to save the children of which I observed in a apartment complex near a major university are f***ing and drinking themselves crazy almost every night. So what's the Thai society to do, but blame the foreigners, cigarette companies and alcohol companies. Now if you notice the fine print in the article concerning banning alcohol ads on television you will see that the proposed law raises the age of buying alcohol from the current 18 to 21. Now how would it be possible given that law is passed that a girl can consume drinks and/or work in a bar if she is less than 21? You can bet the police in their recent social order campaign will make that transition especially since it effects most farang night light hang outs. Here is the news story
"Alcohol advertising to be banned The public health ministry has rejected a recommendation to limit the hours for advertising alcohol on television, and will ban all advertising for alcoholic drinks, all the time, in all media. The laws are expected to be announced in March. Public Health Minister Pinit Jarusombat said this morning that a meeting of the Alcoholic Consumption Control Board has deliberated the draft legislation controlling alcoholic beverages and a law banning advertising alcoholic beverages in all media. He said that the advertising time has been proposed to change from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. to 2-to-5 a.m. In the end, the minister told Radio Thailand, the committee decided to ban all advertisements of the products on television, on all radio stations and in all print media. Mr. Pinit said that a sub-committee has been set up to draft the law, adding that it should not take longer than 30-45 days and can be announced without cabinet approval. The draft legislation will also cover the distribution of alcoholic beverages, making the minimum age of alcoholic buyers from 18 to 21 years old. In related news, protesters at the Securities and Exchange Commission have vowed to continue demonstrations against the approval of a Singapore stock market listing for bear and liquor giant Thai Beverage."
Now what if you the farang buys a drink for a under age drinker. Hmmm.. the payoff here could dwarf any ST/LT fees that you have been used to paying.

TU: It appears the Thai mentality is that if a product is not advertised or openly seen, then it does not exist and the young people cannot be tainted. Yet more stupidity coming from Government House. ---------------------------------------------------- This does raise a multiitude of questions concerning buying LDs in a bar for a 20 year old. Curiouser and curiouser.

Well is it just me or do other here observe this as well. It seems to me that a few years ago there was a very public Social Order campaign of which you could read new stories in the paper on how they were going to clean-up Thailand with late night visiting places with TV crews in tow. Now it seems all this very visible publicity is not being done, but new laws are being passed with little opposition or not even subject to cabinet approval. Then the police are put into efforcement action on these laws. So it seems they are using the "Speak softly, but carry a big stick approach" It should be an interesting year.

Current law bans persons under 20 from entering bars as customers, but doesn't stop 18 or 19 year old girls from working in bars. The LDs are supposed to be non-alcoholic for these girls, so presumably there's no problem. Speak softly and carry a big dick.

I'd be surprised if anything develops out of this. So many policemen and politicans enjoy the company of 18 yr olds in karaokes etc... not just me. Besides that, what are all these girls supposed to do with themselves anyway after finishing matthayom 6 and before they reach 21, freelance at Sanam Luang? Nah, it's best they're indoors out of the rain, with friends and songs they like.

True but it does say "minimum age of alcoholic buyers from 18 to 21 years old." It doesn't say they can't consume? Just they can't buy it would be my guess. I am sure it will make as much sense as the law that says I can BF a 18 yr old and take her to my room but can't take her to a disco? bimmher
