As some of you know, I have been coming to Thailand many years. I have quite a few friends in high places and have just received some disturbing information.

I am being told the 30 day visa on arrival might be stopped in the near future. The current Thai government feels this is letting in too many sex tourists and they want to stop this part of the tourist industry.

What I am told is in the works is that you will have to secure an entry visa into Thailand by presenting yourself at the nearest Thai Embassy and applying for a tourist visa. You must do this in person and cannot use the mails for this purpose. In addition, if you are single it is recommended that you have a genuine reason for visiting Thailand, other than the obvious reason. It will help if you have a genuine sports or theological interest in visiting Thailand.

Just a heads-up that something might be coming down the line someday.

Interesting post, I'll believe it when I see it. If I remember correctly didn't LOS just extend the 30 day visa on arrival to the Russians? They would lose a lot of money especially if they extended this to the Asian tourists.

About time this was changed.

Any pro active move to stop sex tourists can only be a good thing.

Unfortunately people will not be detered and Thai embassy officials will not be refusing visa's. They need the tourist dollars and I can see the uproar in a western country from a sex tourist being refused entry to Thailand even when he states his purpose as tourist.

This is more likely a way to generate more cash, the visa will of course not be for free and it is a good way to get in some more foreign currency for the Thai economy.

They should take this a step further even.

All single applicants that have visited Thailand on a more than frequent basis and in their home country are on welfare or pensions, should be refused. These are obviously the cheap assed tourist on a mission for sex alone.

hmmm, interesting if true, they changed the visa on arrival policy in Indonesia a couple of years ago from 60 days free to pay for 30 days for most western countries (although it is still issued on arrival), and although initially tourist numbers increased thay are well down now

However, they have of course had to contend with a second bali bombing, the Tsunami, bird flu fears etc. It really was a shame though because to do any proper travelling in indo 30 days is really inadeqate and the land barriers make renewals far from easy, so I believe it puts many travellers off.

Thailand of course wouldn't face thoses problems but I can't see why it would put sex tourists off, the tourist visa are extremely easy to get, your passport is back within about 48 hours in the UK.

This surprises me, and as there is an ASEAN agreement on Visa free travel between ASEAN Members won't affect the so called Sex Tourists from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan & Singapore. Certainly one to watch but after tomorrows Election nothing would surprise me!

Highly Doubt this. Thailand is not going to do anything to make it harder for tourism to flourish. Besides tourism, any new law like that would make it harder for companies to do business in Thailand.

Also, if they did change it as you said, Not being able to mail passports for a VISA is the craziest thing I have ever heard. How to do you think companies get business visas, not by showing up to the Thai Embassy.

I think your friend is FOS. If they really wanted to stop sex tourists, they would crack down on GoGos and street walkers. That is cheap and easy.

As much as the f***ing do gooders want to believe that the majority of tourists coming to thailand are "Sex Tourists", that just is not the case.

You are a tool!.

So all retired guys who have worked hard all their lives, and want to enjoy thailand, should not be alllowed?

Too bad thai law lets you have a retirement visa if you are over 55, so your idea will never happen.

Did you see the post about the April Fools joke?

BTW, you can get a retirement visa in Thailand if you are 50 years or older. They changed the law a few years back.

Good one, EPC - rare that so many folks will fall for an April Fool's joke, but you've pretty much hit upon all the critical points - and folks seem to not have a calendar handy.
