While not specifically related to Thailand this will affect people travelling to and from LOS (or anywhere) either from or via the UK.

UK threat level increased to critical
10 August 2006

The UK threat level has been increased to critical following the disruption of a major terrorist plot to target UK flights. The Department for Transport has issued important travel advice to anyone travelling from a UK airport.

Following this morning’s police action, security at all UK airports has been increased and additional security measures have been put in place for all flights.

With immediate effect, the following arrangements apply to all passengers starting their journey at a UK airport and to those transferring between flights at a UK airport.

All cabin baggage must be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:

pocket size wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc (not handbags) )
travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets)
prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (eg, diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic
spectacles and sunglasses, without cases
contact lens holders, without bottles of solution
for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags)
female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (eg tampons, pads, towels and wipes)
tissues (unboxed) and/or hanBKerchiefs
keys (but no electrical key fobs)
All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.

Pushchairs and walking aids must be x-ray screened, and only airport-provided wheelchairs may pass through the screening point.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

There are no changes to current hold baggage security measures.

Regrettably, significant delays at airports are inevitable. Passengers are being asked to allow themselves plenty of extra time and to ensure that other than the few permitted items listed above, all their belongings are placed in their hold baggage and checked in.

These additional security measures will make travel more difficult for passengers, particularly at such a busy time of the year. But they are necessary and will continue to keep flights from UK airports properly secure. We hope that these measures, which are being kept under review by the government, will need to be in place for a limited period only. In light of the threat to aviation and the need to respond to it, we are asking the traveling public to be patient and understanding and to cooperate fully with airport security staff and the police.

If passengers have any questions on their travel arrangements or security in place at airports they should contact their airline or carrier.

I will be comming to Thailand in 11 weeks time and if these restrictions are still in place, then:
- I will not have a change of clothes.
- I can not have a shave.
- I can not brush my teeth or wash my mouth.
- I can not use my noise-canceling headphones.
- I can not take on board a book to read.
- I can not take any snacks not even a bottle of water, for my waiting around at the airport or my wait for a connecting flight in Dubai.
- I have to put all my valuables in the hold, (thieving baggage handlers worldwide must be thinking that Christmas has come early).
- I can not even carry a pen to fill out the Immigration card before landing at BKK.

Thank you pakistani muslim extremist terrorist assholes for making flying even more difficult. I have a flight to Shanghai out of of NYC on Friday. The airlines are saying to get to the airport FIVE HOURS before my departure.

All the more reason to take a cab directly to a soapy massage parlor where they will clean you up satisfactorily and relieve the stress of traveling.

Seriously, the only thing that I'm worried about is where to hide the sleeping pill I take shortly after takeoff!

I guess this will make my future trips infinitely easier -- I will fly with nothing but my clothes, and my travel documents. Then, upon arrival, straight to a soapie to wash off the travel grime. Then, off to my tailor to pick up new clothes, and off to Panthip to purchase new underwear.

The only real grueling trouble I will have is how to transport my MacBook, and my digital camera.

As if there weren't already enough reasons to dislike the muslim extremists - I really wish the West would finally do something about these nuissances...

Here's a link to the TSA site that details what will and what won't be allowed on flights within the U.S. or which originate within the U.S. Laptops and electonic devices are still allowed as carry-ons, it's the liquid stuff that's totally banned except for baby formula and breast milk.

There's the answer for you Basil, take a lactating TBG with you - she'll keep you amused on the flight and you'll have something to drink.
