Hi Guys, I know most of the yanks here will definitly remember this case....they may of caught the actual killer and where do you think that would be?????? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060816/ap_on_re_us/jonbenet_ramsey ----------------------------------------------------------------------- WASHINGTON - A man arrested in Thailand is being held in connection with the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, U.S. law enforcement officials said Wednesday. Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges. The girl was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 26, 1996. Law enforcement officials from Boulder were flying to Bangkok to present Thai authorities with documents in the slaying of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant, officials in Washington said. They asked to remain anonymous pending an announcement in Colorado. The girl's parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, had been under an "umbrella of suspicion" in JonBenet's death. The Ramseys said an intruder killed their daughter. A grand jury investigation in Boulder ended with no indictments, and no arrests had been made in the case. Patsy Ramsey died in July. In 2003, U.S. District Judge Julie Carnes in Atlanta concluded that the evidence she reviewed suggested an intruder killed JonBenet. That opinion came with the judge's decision to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit against the Ramseys by a freelance journalist, who the Ramseys had named as a suspect in their daughter's murder. The Boulder district attorney at the time said she agreed with Carnes' declaration. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ after the parents were aquited they moved to my home town and I would see them around all the time. I wouldnt say they had the auroa of guilt hanging over them (like OJ LOL!) atl

The Ramsey's were not acquitted, because they never were charged or indicted for any crimes related to their daughter's death. I am still very skeptical of this latest "development."

Alan, my bad...I thought it went to a grand jury and not enough evidence was presented to support a trial... regardless...I would say many people/authorities thaught they had something to do with it and they moved back to the ATL several months after Jon Benet was murdered. I agree a bit with your skeptisism (sp?) in that if it went this long....the guy would most likely had to of flat out admitted it and why? It had been 10 years since the murders so I would think he must of applied for a new or renewed an old passport in the last few years which would indicate to me they were not actively searching for him at that time??????????? anyone know where he taught? cheers, atl

me again I just saw on CNN that he apparently confessed to parts of the crime and they had been following him for several weeks with no leaks to the media..it was thru an online chat with another guy in Colorado that led to the cops trailing the guy. The sex crime bust in BKK gave them the opportunity to grill him on it. if this turns out to be true... it is a shame that the mother (Patsy?) just died last month without the feeling of vindification! I still am interested about where he taught??????? atl

It is being reported that Patsy Ramsey was informed about the police investigation of the suspect that resulted in today's announcement before she died. You are correct that the case went to a grand jury and the Ramsey’s were "no-billed," which is not an acquittal, but a decision to not indict (to charge with a crime and hold a trial to determine guilt or innocence). If an indictment occurs and the case goes to trial and one is acquitted, one cannot be tried a second time. If a grand jury issues a "no bill" then they can still indict a later time if more evidence is uncovered (or for any reason). The other way that one can be held for trial in a criminal case (besides a grand jury indictment) is a preliminary hearing (sort of a mini-trial) where a judge determines whether reasonable cause exists for a criminal charge and a trial. If the judge determines reasonable cause exists and a criminal trial is held, the guilt or innocence is decided by a judge or a jury, at the option of the defendant. In a criminal trial, the decision of the jury must be unanimous. In the OJ Simpson case, there was no grand jury, but a preliminary hearing to determine whether Simpson should be charged and put on trial for murder. The hearing determined that there was probably cause to charge OJ Simpson with a crime, but he was acquitted at the criminal trial by a jury. Of course, all of the above is US law, which varies somewhat by state.
