Expanding from the Tanks in BKK, how is the coup playing in the rest of the country? This comes from the Straits Times: Schools Burned Note that these schools were burned in Kampheang Phet not in the South... DISCLAIMER: As with all Strait Times links this link will probably expire in a week.

Looks like it may be a while before the US Navy visits Phuket or Pattaya again: ------------------------------------------------------------------- US cuts military aid to Thailand WASHINGTON — The United States has cut millions of dollars in military assistance to its ally Thailand in response to the military coup that ousted civilian Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, according to the State Department late yesterday (early today, Singapore time). “In response to the military coup on Sept 19 in Thailand, the United States has suspended almost US$24 million of assistance to the Thai government,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said. He said the aid cutoff involved foreign military financing, international military education and training, and peacekeeping operations. “The US continues to urge a rapid return to democratic rule and early elections in Thailand,” Mr McCormack said. “We look forward to being able to reinstate these programmes after a democratically elected government takes office.” The Thai military has enjoyed years of close ties to US armed forces in the Asia-Pacific region. The US, which has also forged close anti-terror ties with Thailand, had previously condemned the coup and called on the ruling generals to call elections before their one-year deadline. The fate was unclear of the next annual Cobra Gold livefire exercise, the largest US war games in Asia, which the US hosts along with Thailand. Earlier, Thailand’s navy chief said that the junta had decided who they want to replace Mr Thaksin but declined to reveal the name. “The military rulers have agreed by consensus and made our choice for Prime Minister. We are confident that he will be acceptable to the public,” said Admiral Satirapan Keyanon, who is part of the junta. Thai media earlier reported that the main contenders are retired military commander General Surayud Chulanont and former World Trade Organization boss Supachai Panitchpakdi. When asked which of the men had been chosen, Adm Satirapan said “he will not come in this uniform” and pointed at another officer in uniform. He said the announcement of the new Premier would come from coup leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin. A spokesman for the junta earlier said that the new Premier would be announced on Sunday, one day after Gen Sonthi is due to have a royal audience with the King. — AFP -------------------------------------------------------------------- More beer and women for the rest of us...

I found this nugget in another article on yahoo: ".........Winai bristled at remarks by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who described the coup a "a U-turn" for democracy in Thailand................" is that chick smokin crack? U-Turn???????? I would bet she has no clue of what kinda government Thaksin lead...other than the fact they seemed to support Bush (at least to the administrations face)... hell I would bet if you asked Bush before the coup who the prime minister of Thailand was...he couldnt tell you right away. I could be totally wrong but I get the feeling the new leaders may be more democratic and supportive of Farang.. (i.e lowereing the minimum salary for B-visa renewels) Will Someone please wake me up in 2008!!!!!!!!!!! atl

There have been suggestions in some of the ASEAN countries that if Thailand does not install a democratically elected government soon it could: -- Discourage any firm action to get the military to restore democracy in Myanmar -- Encourage malcontents in the Philippine Army to stage a coup -- Discourage any action against Indonesian Military Officers who are being investigated for Human Rights violations in Aceh and East Timor as this may spark a coup against the civilian government. It probably just Chicken Little crying about the 'sky falling' but it does provide food for thought...

As an Amerikan, my personal belief is the USA should just butt out for a while, and let things unfold in BKK. How the US ever considered Thaksin, who was creating a one party system and slowly strangling dissent, a voice of democracy, is beyond me. Yep, taking power is easy, if you're the military, and putting back into the hands of the people is certainly harder than taking it. But something had to give, and it finally did. The US needs friends, not enemies, so my vote, stay the hell out of Thai politics until/unless the military decide they can't/won't put Humpty Dumpty back together again. After the shameful behavior I witnessed while at the US embassy in BKK last year, I don' t see the US having any moral highground in LOS. - Balls

Well, that makes sense - must save face while supporting other dictator buddies. It's just so sad how the US is illustrating how our administration is so filled with total morons. Like said, I doubt anyone in the administration would even be able to name who the prior prime minister was. Idiots!

In other news (from BangkokPost.com) : Anti-coup driver rams taxi into army tank By Manop Thip-osod A taxi driver risked death yesterday to send his anti-coup message across by ramming his car into an army tank at the Royal Plaza. Nuamthong Praiwan, 60, of Nonthaburi, was put on a respiratory machine for about 10 hours after he broke three ribs in the high-speed crash. Eyewitnesses said the taxi emerged from the Makkhawanrangsan Bridge at around 6am. The speeding cab forced its way through a barricade before crashing into the tank, heavily damaging its bonnet and windscreen. The tank was found without any scratches. Dusit police chief Ake-kapol Tawitwongchaigul said evidence suggested the protest was pre-planned. Both sides of the taxi were sprayed with messages in black reading "the destroyers of the country", and "martyr" was sprayed on the taxi's boot. Soldiers manning the scene said they saw the taxi circling the area a couple of times before the incident. But the driver's wife, Chusri, 51, said her husband had never shown any tendency to hurt himself in this fashion, though she admitted he is an avid political observer. An initial probe found that Mr Nuamthong was not driving under the influence of alcohol or loss of consciousness, said Pol Maj Ake-kapol. Tranquillisers were found inside the taxi's wreckage. Mr Nuamthong was charged with reckless driving and damaging private and state property. A doctor treating the driver said he had suffered no brain injuries and could talk.

Back to the coup in general, I was just thumbing through Paul Handley's "The King Never Smiles," and on pp 136-138 is described a very familiar scenario happening in 1957 -- popularly elected officials getting drunk with power, taking over everything, accusations of corrupt elections, the King suggesting that the government step down, government refuses, swift coup, King's blessing. I'm really condensing the chapter here, I'm sure the background details varied somewhat from the present, but this is definitely not new territory for Bhumibol. A very interesting read.

How does it go? "He who ignores the past is doomed to repeat it" How's that history lesson taste, Mr. Thaksin?
