From the National News Bureau 29 October 2006 NEWS HEADLINE :. HM the Queen expresses concern over TV program showing “Coyote Girls” dancing in temple Minister of Culture Khunying Khaisri Sri-arun has conveyed Her Majesty the Queen's concern over a TV program showing “Coyote Girls” dancing in a temple. Khunying Khaisri said the royal concern was contained in a letter sent by the Office of Her Majesty's Principal Private Secretary. According to the letter, Her Majesty the Queen noticed the scene while watching a tv program on the Naga’s Fireballs Festival in Nong Khai Province. The Minister quoted the letter as saying that after the program Her Majesty commented that Thailand is a center of Buddhism and there is a number of foreigners who have faith in the religion traveling to the country to be ordained as a monk. Fore more than 800 years, Buddhism has instilled gentleness and generosity in the Thai Buddhists. Consequently, all Buddhists should express their appreciations to the Buddha with respect during the religion’s holy days. Any performances on the holy days should be conducted appropriately, taking into account the country’s reputation. After receiving the letter, the Ministry informed relevant government agencies such as the Interior Ministry, Royal Thai Police, Office of the Consumer Protection Board, and Office of the National Buddhism, to explore possible laws that organizers of the dances might have violated.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 30 October 2006 :- Thailand to ban underage 'Coyote Girls' ============================== In apparent response to Her Majesty the Queen's concern over a popular racy dance craze by "Coyote Girls", Thailand's Ministry of Culture is issuing a regulation prohibiting female students aged under 20 to become "Coyote Girls" and "Pretty Girls", young women usually featured in provocative clothing hired by merchants to promote their products. Seeing TV footage of flirtatious dancing during a broadcast from the recent Rocket Festival in the northeastern province of Nong Khai, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit expressed concern through her secretary that "coyote dancing" seemed inappropriate at such an event and would tarnish the image of Thailand as a centre of Buddhism. The ministry plans both short-term and long-term measures to deal with the matter. Immediately the ministry ordered heads of provincial cultural offices to coordinate local administration and police to strictly monitor and for inappropriate shows not to be allowed in public places, according to Ladda Tangsupachai, director of the ministry's cultural watchdog centre. Some businesses had hired the young women to dress and dance provocatively at temple entrances and other places during busy festivals, it was explained. an activity and location which the Queen found inappropriate. Ms. Ladda said that heads of provincial cultural offices must report to the ministry monthly and the ministry will report progress of its implementation to Her Majesty the Queen's secretary. Meanwhile, Ms. Ladda said, the Ministry of Culture and the Education Ministry will enact a ministerial regulation banning students aged below 20 to work as Coyote Girls or Pretty Girls. The regulation will be effective immediately upon being issued. As for the long-term solution, the director said, the ministry will hold a national workshop deliberating establishment of a National Cultural Fund to preserve and protect the Thai culture as well as to solve cultural problems in sustainable manner. The scheme will be put on the national agenda, she said.

This is unfortunate, as this runs the risk of giving these girls no other option than to be 'regular' dancers, or BarGirls... Seems to me that a Coyote Girl at least has a better reputation than a girl that sells her body directly. Seems like a kneejerk reaction to a single scene in a movie.

In my short 7 yrs experience of travelling and staying in the North and NorthEast of Thailand, it is part of the common culture to have fairs and parties on temple grounds. This may be a Morlum show in Isan or dancing with the sao meow in a Northern village, these always involve loud music, drinking, and either sexy girls on stage or one actually giving small tips to get on the stage and dance with them. I have seen them get very risque, if not downright lewd. I always figures this was a practice older than the hills; perhaps those pointy chedis even excite the girls further? In any event, this is obviously what the people enjoy. Besides that, where else but the temple grounds is there going to be space enough with electricity for this kind of things in these villages? Buddhism in Thailand? Hardly ever seen it. They've got a mishmash here, more old than new. Although I must respect her majesty's concern for the international image of Thailand in the eyes of the world who may not understand how things operate here. Anyway, "girls under 20", oh well.
