I actually had problems accessing the forum yesterday from outside Asia but not CNN et al, I presumed it was doe to the quake (quack?) I read about on CNN

My friend in Hong Kong is pretty much cut off. The only things he is capable of loading right now are Google (which I presume is being routed internally, by these smart Google guys), and his project website (which I strongly suspect he is simply using the cached version from his browser).
Working with him now to set up fail-over/mirrored servers of his content in China (he can access all local/non-international sites just fine).
Seems like Thailand is less affected than Hong Kong - hopefully they get it fixed soon (which, by Chinese standards means "a couple of weeks")

I am in Bangkok ( my how I love to be able to say that). I can access the forum very quickly. Other sites in Thailand, I can access ok as well. But it is sites outside of Thailand (eg, google, NY Times, etc) that I can not access or take forever to load.

Thanks for telling us what is going on. Oldtimer has been unable to get though to certain sites in Japan and USA today from my base in Phuket. Others sites seem to be unaffected.
Any idea concerning when the undersea cables will be mended? And what are internet dependent whallas like Oldtimer supposed to do in the meantime? Go back to using Morse? Yes, I earned by daily bread for a while at the end of a telegrapher's key. I am really that old!

I'm using True ADSL package and i've had full internet and email access all day today at usually fast speeds, no probs for me, I'm in Bangkok.

Hard to say, Oldtimer. When I opened today I got a msg from TRUE (my svc) explaining the matter and saying they didn't know when it would be fixed. The news says a couple weeks or so. However I've found that sometimes it's OK, usually not.

I'd say that it will take the traditional 'two weeks' for things to return to normal. It'll take the officials at least one week to realize why they can't reach anyone on the phone.
