just called the family in mahasarakham and they're blissfully unaware of the quake, bless 'em. Let's hope none got hurt anywhere, but an earthquake measuring 6.1 Ritcher scale is moderate, bordering to great magnitude.

Glad to hear he's fine. And that no one was hurt. But Oh no. Being from California where earthquakes are common if not monthly and having went through the frightening chaos of the big 7.1 quake in October 17 of 1989 (I happened to be in Santa Cruz) then (Loma Prieta quake when the Bay Bridge collapsed etc... the aftershocks for days were maddening and just as big as large earthquakes... my cat-like senses being wound up pretty tight then)... I have to say that one of the very pleasant things about living here in BKK has always been the lack of earthquakes... Well, until now? I can't say that the concrete structures here with the inner brick walls are exactly what I'd think of as quake resistant.

Can someone go see if the Miami Hotel is still standing? We can only hope not. When DrLove came to Thailand 20 years ago, he stayed at the Miami Hotel and it was falling apart then. All it needed was someone to stand next to it and push it over!

Hmph - 6.1 is barely a wobble, if that, for us from Southern California - though I do admit that I would be a tad bit more worried in a place built *not* to code, i.e. *any* taller building in BKK. Though, regarding this quake, less worried about BKK, but rather interested to see how places closer to Laos fared, like Udontani, or such - any news from there?

I lived in Japan and California for many years and have had my fair share of "shake rattle and roll". I don't believe BKK has any earthquake related building codes, matter of fact I wonder if they actully have any codes at all. Geeze lets not beat me up on this last quip. The taller buildings always do a nice shake, bet most of the people at ground level never knew anything was going on. Didn't know that area was prone to quakes either. Shamas O'Dognasty

I believe the tallest building in BKK ( Baiyoke) was engineered by Australians,,, so if it hasn't already fallen down, I doubt it will. Unless Sarge terrorists crash planes into it just to proove me wrong!!! Mel
