BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) -- An American tourist has been shot dead during a quarrel in a restaurant in northern Thailand with an Australian man, police say.
The 46-year-old tourist, Gary Poretsky from Hawaii, was shot three times by William Douglas in Chiang Mai after they quarreled, said police Capt. Somsak Phanthong.
Douglas, 65, is being detained on charges of premeditated murder, Somsak said.
I wonder if the fighting was about who has the best beef or the smoking ban?

Australian long-term resident admits killing.

Police in Chiang Mai confirmed last Saturday that William Thomas Douglas, 61, an Australian national From Western Australia and long-term resident of Chiang Mai, had been charged with the murder of 46 year old American Gary Booth Poretsky.
Police at the restaurant, with the murder victim still lying underneath the table.
The shooting occurred on Saturday morning at the Koie Chiang Mai restaurant near the moat, where the two men had been drinking. Police were called to the scene of the crime, and found Poretsky’s body on the floor underneath a table. He had been shot three times, twice in the body and once in the head.
The killer had fled the scene, but later surrendered to the police and admitted his crime.
A witness to the shooting told police that she had seen Douglas “showing off” the gun to the Hawaiian, Poretsky, and stated that, “The Australian was trying to say that he was a big guy in Chiang Mai. The two men had an argument”
. In a statement given to police, Douglas is alleged to have said that he had links with the Thai Narcotics Suppression Bureau and senior police officials.
An official from the Australian Embassy in Bangkok, Robin Hamilton-Coates, said that Douglas is being held at Chiang Mai police headquarters, where he has been visited by the Australian Consul in Chiang Mai, and will be transferred later to a local prison.
A Chiang Mai police spokeswoman told press that Douglas had lived in Chiang Mai for 28 years, and was fluent in the local language. He will appear in court at an unconfirmed date. The reason behind the killing is at present unknown.
Mr Poretsky was said to have $6,000US all $100 notes on his person

Australian William Douglas allegedly shot Poretsky three times and ran away. He later turned himself in. Le Fevre said Douglas, 60, confessed to the shooting while in jail.
"That's basically what he's told police - he doesn't like Americans and he thinks Americans talk down to people, flout their superiority, so he shot this poor fellow," Le Fevre said.

24hr drinking in Thailand, hmmm, must be in one of those special 'entertaiment zones' I guess as all bars have to shut by 2am at the latest according to the law right, and the police really enforce that right
