Aussies spark Changi alert 5:00AM Friday January 25, 2008 Fighter jets were scrambled and a massive security alert sparked when two Australians flew a light plane into Singapore's busy airspace without permission. Commercial airspace over one of the world's busiest airports was locked down for 50 minutes early Wednesday, the Straits Times reported. The two unnamed occupants of the Australian plane were questioned by Singapore's police but yesterday no charges had been laid. The shutdown at Changi Airport forced at least 16 aircraft to circle, delaying arrivals and departures. One plane diverted to Malaysia as it ran low on fuel. The Air Force sent F16s to intercept the Cessna 208 Caravan float plane after tracking its approach from Thailand and discovering it had no approved flight plan. ___________________________________________ A bit of gossip.... ......one of my staff is a friend of the Aussie mechanic who was on the plane (1 pilot and 1 mechanic only on board) - they were flying the plane from Koh Samui Thailand back to Broome in OZ via Singapore - both were detained in Singapore and the mechanic was only released a week or two ago - the pilot is still "detained" in Singapore (it is now March, some two months worth) What was the original cause of it all? It seems the pilot refused to pay the required "tea money" when he handed over the flight plan at Samui airport. "He asked for a bribe and we told him to stick it." is the 2nd hand direct quote I was given. Funny how your attitudes can change, all I can think is the pilot should have known better...."Som nam nar". Enjoy.

Another bizarre Aussie tale making the rounds the week..... “Man said Wombat rape led to Australian accent A New Zealand man who claimed he was raped by a wombat and that the experience left him speaking with an Australian accent has been found guilty of wasting police time Arthur Cradock, 48, from the South Island town of Motueka, called police last month to tell them he was being raped by the marsupial at his home and needed urgent assistance Cradock, an orchard worker, later called back to reassure the police operator that he was all right. "I’ll retract the rape complaint from the wombat, because he’s pulled out. Apart from speaking Australian now, I’m pretty all right you know. I didn’t hurt my bum at all” He pleaded guilty in Nelson District Court to using a phone for a ficticious purpose and was sentenced to 75 hours’ community work Police prosecutor Sergeant Chris Stringer told the court that alcohol played a large role in Cradock’s life Judge Richard Russell said he was not sure what had motivated Cradock to make the extraordinary claim. In sentencing Cradock, he warned him not to do it again” http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/03/27/wwombat127.xml
