Hey guys:
During the Tsunami and the last coup, there was more and better information from the bros on here than there was in the BKK papers or the networks, etc....
If you have a moment, how about an update now and then on the reality of the political "disturbances," and how they're affecting reality as we tourists know it. (such as the Central World march this morning).
Reading The Nation I'm convinced that there will be civil war by the time I get there in late Nov.
Would appreciate your.02.

As a tourist it did seem to me that the papers were exaggerating. I remember before I undertook my flight last week I was reading up so much of bangkokpost and nationmultimedia that it drove me to call up my country's embassy in Bangkok and enquire if it was fit to travel. They were quite cool and assured me it was fine to travel. As things turned out, once I was in Bangkok it took the morning papers every day to remind me that there was supposed to be trouble in Bangkok. On the streets everything was hunky dory as BKK always is. The bars and clubs were rocking as usual until 2 am, the MPs were active till 3 am, the MP in my hotel, and the coffee shop were open all night, the girls on Sukhumvit Road were eating noodles well past 3 am, the pavement bars on Suk that open at night were open till 5 am, the city never slept, and at least one tourist (me) was not troubled by any unpleasantness of any sort. At 3 in the morning I even got cabs and tuktuks from Patpong as usual.
Now that I am back home, I read the abovementioned websites once again just to keep in touch and they continue to assure me that there is trouble in Bangkok, there is the possibility of violent clashes tomorrow, and so on.

Civil War ???
No way.
Thailand has had some 15 or more Coups since 1930.
And perhaps 100 people have died.... max.
Thats about 1 Thai per year.
Less dangerous statistically than driving or slipping while getting in to or out of a bathtub.
The deep buddhist religious tradition here makes it almost impossible for any extended violence.
And that will most likely be confined to the political part of town near the Palace.

Sorry guy: Don’t mean to nit pick but Thailand has suffered 18 coups since 1932.
You are right; it is safer to be in a Thai Revolution than to step out of your bath. Last Year (in America alone) 3,801 suffered serious injury exiting their bathtubs. I really apologize for even burdening you with this statistic. My hobby is to gleam this very unimportant info. It somehow seems to empower me.

Did you happen to read all of my post ?
I said... " Thailand has had some 15 or more Coups since 1930."
Notice the word "some" indicating the number is approximate.

The number 100 is probably on the low side of an estimate. What would your reading of Thai history indicate is a better estimate of deaths during Coups ?
I am interested to learn.
BTW, Samak said only 1 person died in 1976 [?] which I am sure is BS.

I know it's not Bangkok, but I was stuck in Phuket when the first wave of demos hit and couldn't get a flight back as the demonstrators blocked the airport. On the 2nd and 3rd days, when the demo was in "full swing", I tried to get into the airport.
I certainly wouldn't call it dangerous, just your typical Thais sitting down, blocking the road, eating and drinking, listening to the main man shouting through the microphone. When I tried to find out what was going on, most people were friendly to me and I was even interviewed on video for my opinions.
I would hazard a guess that the Bangkok demos are pretty much the same for the most part, although on a larger scale - which might account for injuries etc as the demos will naturally attract the drunken element.
I would not let this spoil your plans.
