Police asked to improve security at PAD venues

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) has asked police to tighten security at its rally venues and ASTV television station after bomb attacks were directed at the anti-government group in the early hours yesterday.

Chamlong: Rare talk with city police chief

The alliance also wants police and PAD guards to make joint perimeter patrols.

A grenade was fired into the PAD camp inside the Government House grounds early yesterday, injuring 48 people. Two were in a serious condition, the Narenthon Emergency Response Centre reported.

Another grenade exploded on the PAD perimeter outside Don Mueang airport, injuring two people.

There was also an explosion near the ASTV head office, but no reports of injuries. ASTV is the television channel founded by PAD core leader Sondhi Limthongkul.

The attacks led to PAD core leader Chamlong Srimuang holding a rare talk with Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Suchart Muankaew at the Army Auditorium in Si Sao area. He asked for better security measures at ASTV and the rally sites.

PAD guards have been patrolling only within the rally venues, leaving outer areas a target for attackers.

Police would be a help in those areas and a joint patrol of police and PAD guards would improve security, Maj-Gen Chamlong said.

Police were allowed immediate access to inspect the rally venues after yesterday's attacks. The PAD usually delays or bars them.

It is the first time the two sides have cooperated since the violent crackdown by police on PAD demonstrators on Oct 7 outside parliament.

Pol Lt-Gen Suchart said it was a good starting point for any future negotiations.

"Talking is a way to reduce distrust," he said after meeting Maj-Gen Chamlong.

Hospitals treated and discharged 42 victims of yesterday's bombings.

Eight were still being treated at Ramathibodi, Phramongkutklao and Petcharavej hospitals.

Two women - Jitra Jintanatam, 52, and Kamonwan Muennu, 26 - sustained severe head injuries at Government House and were in the intensive care unit, doctors said.

The PAD suspected the attack on the Government House rally was launched from the nearby Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives building. Witnesses said they saw a few men walking on the roof before the attack, according to the PAD.

The explosion at Don Mueang airport injured two people. One of them was a bystander, Tiem Euatatan, who suffered a stomach wound.

The blast left a 10-centimetre-wide hole near Gate 6 of the domestic passenger terminal, where the PAD shelters behind a six-wheel truck, car tyres and barbed wire barricade.

Police thought the assailants used an M-26 hand grenade, which has a blast radius of 10 metres

Can someone please explain to me how is it possible for PAD to ask the police to protect them break the law and keep holding the airports? I cannot understand how is it possible. And it seems police takes this seriously...!

I think it's really a no win situation for the police. If they help the PAD to tighten security, they would be helping them break the law; however, if the police doesn't help PAD, I am certain that PAD would accuse the police of involvement with the attacks on PAD.
