jingjo, there has to be more to this story than meets the eye. And I think there are a few indications in the story of what that "more" might be.
'Aussie Bar owner Steve Wood said Ms Smoel had "rubbed the wrong people the wrong way".' Why would an Aussie be saying this about one of his own? What people? (You have to love the quality of the reporting...)
"He told Radio 3AW, Ms Smoel had fled when approached by police and was later spotted at a beach and walked to Patong police station where she abused the police chief."
If that's true, then she lied to 3AW. If it's not true, why is Wood lying? Of course, he wasn't there that night, so perhaps someone is lying to him. But I think there is no question that she pissed someone off at some point. That is the reason you spend time in a Thai jail, not because you were the victim of a bar prank.
But my favorite is her complaint about the food. ""They would bring food twice a day. It was food from the street." Ah, we all know how terrible that street food is in LOS.... pure torture.

Just Seems a bit over the top I feel, just fine her and let here go home to her kids!
She won't be going back to Thailand after this.
Maybe it's good? keep them Whiskey Tango's out of the Boys playground.

For a 36 year old mother of four, she looks decent. Maybe the prison guards like the idea of a new toy.
By the way, funny how small the mat and how big her handbag must have beena s to her not notice the prank.
My guess is that she took one of those "I am from a first world civilized country, superior to you guys from an undervelopped third world country" approach and now they are making her pay for that.

She must have really insulted the wrong people. Typical I'm drunk, and better than you action. And her husband thinks the Aussie Embassy should be doing more.....lolol. It seems the same attitude runs in the family.
She'll go to jail unless she pleads guilty, and begs forgiveness for her stupidity, but that's not likely to happen........lolol. She'll probably do 2 months in jail, then be pardoned by H.M. the King.

Bar owners that have bars catering to farangs are so jumpy and cautious about their bar towels e.t.c. They can't get them so easily as bars in Europe.
Once I saw a guy thrown out with an angry bar owner screaming at him what have he done? Blown his nose in the small towel lying on the bar counter 
I have read about a Swedish couple on vacation in Phuket getting 5 years for shoplifting a couple of T shirt      .
As far as I know they still sitting in jail.

So it is stated by the bar owner that this bar mat/rag cost 60 dollars, Geez I want to get into the business of selling these items.
This bodes well for bring more tourism to Thailand.
