Excerpt from Timesonline....be careful at the BKK airport. "A British couple who were falsely accused of shoplifting in Bangkok airport and were forced to pay £8,000 in bribes to secure their release are to take legal action for compensation. They were the victims of an extortion racket that has ensnared other foreign travellers at the airport, which handles most of the 800,000 British visitors to Thailand every year...." http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6590584.ece

Some scarry reading. I was in the in the airport last week and bought some books at the BKK airport and the shop people gave me an extra book--saying "for you free." Of course I said thank you and went on my way to catch my United flight. I went dirctly through the security and to my terminal/ I do not think the scammers were up yet because I had no incident and it was that 0650 flight to Narita. Ironically one of the books I bought was "Send me to Hell" The one about the brit who spent 17 years in a Thai prison for a planted drug scam. May have doddged a bullet!? gym-- Thanks for the info--no more purchases in Land of Scams

In my experience the only two items that are less expensive in "duty free", are cigarettes and "some" liquors. A carton of cigarettes that cost 16 U S Dollars in duty free will cost about $75 dollars in the States. And now that you can’t carry liquor on flights to US and Australia, there are discounts on this. But overall, duty free is a rip off...

since the saving on cigarettes is only around 100 baht per carton v the street price I will make sure I go nowhere near any shops in the airport. Everything else is just the ubiquitous overpriced tat anyway. Just left a suitable message to this effect on the King Power customer contact page.

So far there have been only a few isolated cases of tourists who claim to have been conned out of money by somebody, possibly entirely unrelated to King Power. What's more, for all the claims of scams happening at the airport etc. involving fake customs officials, mafia and now supposedly King Power, all of which are based on rumour and none based on fact. Personally I go in and out of Bangkok airport about 5 times a year and have done for the last 10 years and have never had any problems. I also have 20+ friends in a similar boat and none of them have complained of any wrongdoings at the airport. This doesn't mean it does not/has not happened, but I would be very surprised, in this case if King Power had a policy of sneakily dropping wallets, electricals or whatever, into clear plastic bags, which in my case are always filled and sealed in front of the customer, and then cunningly catching you later with your stolen booty only to remove you from the airport, past customs officials, and take you to a remote location and extort 8,000 quid form you. TIT, but that is just too far fetched.
