Maybe i'm a bit old for Disneyland - but with all due respect to Walt - I found a much bigger and better place- with free parking and no entrance fee- it is Thailand
Two trips a year turned into three- sometimes four --- I found a TGF that worked at Baccara- and allowed her to return to Ubon - and work in a hair salon.
But there were always a few days to monger before she arrived.
This time, though, the Red Shirts were already staked out- it was in the news- and some suggested I not go
No chance say i- been there too many times- nothing terrible will happen- they are Thai
So we met April 20th- after covering Pattaya on my own- from Secrets to Devils Den-
Of course- the next day- the TGF gives a very good boom boom knowing we always go to Platinum- and she has a 3000 baht budget
Get off BTS at Chit Lom- walk thru a crowd of thousands with most doing what Thais do best- eating and sleeping- there are people selling everything under the sun- from stands on both sides of road- it is a party !!
I text back to USA that all is well- no problem at all. I am home here - they are Thai
God help Thailand with what is happening now. My next trip in July- TGF flies in and we go to Penang- I monger in Angeles City- ( from everything I have heard- a dump with nothing to do but f***.)
So many times we walked past Central World Mall- and now its gone. We got money from Bangkok Bank branch also gone- it is crazy- this was my escape from my country that has also gone mad. A government determined to spend and print money- till it is worth nothing. BUT- at least, here, we only have crazed Muslims trying to kill us- not Thais killing and burning my Disneyland.!!!! My heart is broken - I fear it will never be the same.

Hope QQ is correct bit I fear for Disneyland destroyed. The genie in the red shirt is perhaps out of the bottle and will appear willy nilly to exact revenge and chaos on the innocent, the guilty, the appeasers and the fighters for truth alike. Not to mention decent mongers just out for a good time,eating,drinking,shopping,donating hot fish yoghurt and bringing millions of baht into the country everyday. The images of feckless anarchistic violence and the descent into senseless barbarity makes VN and Cambodian recent history seem horribly close by.

It's very unfortunate that, to you, Thailand is only composed of the area around Pratunam to Central World mall, and apparently no other places exist in Bangkok, or Thailand for that matter.
As for me, I will enjoy my hotel on Soi 41, the cozy massage spa around the corner, the yummy coffee shop on the corner; I will still be popping in and out of MBK; and one nice thing about the current situation is that a lot of the seasonal moslem visitors appear to have left, making for much nicer walkabouts, and leaving fat russian hookers without a meal ticket...

You can't deny it, sadly BK has changed, and for many it will take a long to get the feelgood factor back. Hard core expats may take it in their stride, but for millions of others, the sanook factor has been sucked out by the Red Shirts, violence, fires and constant policital turmoil. The standard has changed, the protests have become more ugly and people are influenced from media images and reporting, however flawed that may be.
For the first time in 15 years I actually felt uneasy walking from Nana to Asoke, this was before the recent violence erupted. Will I ever be able to walk from Nana to Chitlom without thinking there is a sniper looking down at me ? You can't escape these feelings, they are in peoples' heads. I now notice people looking at me more than ever - I feel uneasy....
Maybe time will heal - but maybe things just won't be the same.
