... maybe the continuing social and political decay in Thailand now deserves a "general violence" category, as opposed to "Red's" violence, or "Southern" violence, "mad BG" violence, etc.

Another bomb blast at Soi Rang Nam

Second bomb in a month near King Power complex seriously injures a guard

A security guard was seriously injured when a bomb went off at an entrance of King Power building complex on the Soi Rang Nam side late last night, police said.

It was not immediately clear what type of the bomb was used in the second attack in the same area in less than a month, or whether it was thrown or fired at the target.

King Power has strong political connections with the Bhum Jai Thai Party. There was no substantial damage to the building complex during the 11 pm attack but the security guard was said to be seriously injured in the head. He was immediately taken to a hospital.

King Power has made international news over the past two weeks with its takeover of the Leicester City Football Club in the UK. The takeover is awaiting final approval from the British football authorities.

Reports that police have taken one suspect, a man aged between 20-30 for qustioning, could not be immediately confirmed. The area was immediately sealed off. Neither were reports about police attempts to defuse another bomb that did not explode.

On July 30, another explosion occurred some 100-150 metres from the site of the latest attack. In the July incident, a grenade wrapped with rubber bands was planted in a garbage bin. Gasoline drops were used to gradually tear the rubber bands off.

King Power belongs to Vichai Raksriaksorn, close friend of Newin Chidchob, who is the most powerful man in the Bhum Jai Thai Party.

King power has entrances and exits on the Soi Rangnam side as well as on Sri Ayuthaya Rd.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 3 September 2010 :-

High security for 454 spots in Bangkok
=============================

The Centre for the Resolution of the Emergency Situation (CRES) has resolved to step up security measures by keeping 454 spots in the capital prone to attack under watch round the clock, Pol Maj-Gen Piya Uthayo said on Friday.

Pol Maj-Gen Piya, the Metropolitan police spokesman, said personnel to be deployed for security will be drawn from the 1st Army Region, Metropolitan Police Bureau and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.

Under a special operational plan adopted by the CRES, the 454 spots are in areas with three security levels. They are:

1. 130 spots on full-scale alert. They include royal palaces, houses of important persons, and transport terminals. Security units will be in position within a 400-metre radius from these spots 24 hours a day. They will be supported by foot patrols and surveillance teams.

2. 198 spots on high alert. They include government installations and offices, houses of important persons, and possible targets for symbolic attacks. More checkpoints will be set up near these spots.

3. 136 spots for frequent security checks. They include department stores, banks and crowded areas.

The CRES has also prepared 10 special operations units on call to be dispatched to various spots in an emergency.

BMA's closed-circuit cameras will be checked and repaired to make sure they work properly. The CRES has also received cooperation from the private sector to examine the footage of their CCTV cameras.

Representatives of the 1st Army Region, BMA, Metropolitan Police Divisions 1-9, which will take part in security operations, were to attend a meeting at the CRES headquarters on Friday afternoon to be briefed on the operation plan, Pol Maj-Gen Piya said.

The military/CRES did it, using a third party.

They will continue to do it.

They want to keep the state of emergency going indefinitely.

... residents here might notice the return of armed military posted on the BTS platforms throughout the city... I first noticed them over the weekend... not in as great a number as during the May attacks... they remain as at yesterday (8 Sep).

... perhaps this is government's increased implementation relating to announcements in the above article ("High security for 454 spots in Bangkok", 3 Sep)... perhaps more of a general deployment, rather than a response to a specific threat.

... in any event, with the bombings during the local BKK election a couple of weeks ago, it seems that social violence has not gone away, and that bombings seem to be emerging as the terrorism tool of choice.

... can't wait to see what happens in the upcoming November elections, especially after the Reds clear failure in the BKK elections a couple of weeks ago.

... though veiled, evidence of the disquiet is still apparent... the violence might only be quieted until opportune events emerge... perhaps the mid-term elections in November... perhaps Thaksin's arrest... perhaps the constitutionally mandated election in 2012, a bit more than a year out.
