Breakingnews > Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra is mature enough to know well what he should and should not do to serve the best interests of his homeland, Puea Thai Party chairman Gen Chavalit Yongchaiyudh said on Wednesday. Gen Chavalit was responding to reports that Thaksin would travel to Washington next week to address the US Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE) - an invitation which has sparked concern among key people in the government and outrage among some human rights groups in Thailand. “I personally believe that Thaksin would provide straightforward information to the US human rights panel. He will definitely act for the benefit of the country,” Gen Chavalit said. Asked about the government's intention to seek extradition of the ex-prime minister if he does visit the US, Gen Chavalit said that was up to the relevant state agencies to decide. He predicted the outcome of the Dec 12 by-elections in five provinces, including Bangkok, would have substantial effect on the next general election. “The party that wins the by-elections will use the victory in its public relation campaigning, while the loser will have to lift its game,” he said. In response to questions, he said would accept the prime minister's post if Puea Thai wins the next general election. The other four provinces where by-elections are set for this Sunday are Ayutthaya, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen and Surin. One seat is being contested in each of the five elections.
