I for one have been using the forum to gather information for an upcoming trip to BKK and Phuket . I've never been before but I was in the navy in the 80's and had made more than a few ports of call to explore the nightlife. I went there ( to quote you )"Totally ignorant, with eyes and mind wide open, brain fully engaged and nerves of steel - ready to go anywhere and try anything that seemed likely to be survivable " I know at times I overpaid and put myself at risk in others. As you say there is a certain thrill in it . Now that I'm older but not necessarily wiser , time is an important factor for me . I will use the insight gained here to assure that I'll have a great time without missing an opportunity.

Thanks Max. Great post (for me anyway  ).
I get your point totally about being older and saving time; I take it you know the joke about the old bull and the young bull? It sort of reminds me of that. I too take a different approach to fun-seeking these days.
If I were coming here now, at equal age and experience as now, I would definitely take advantage of this board as you have.

I'm a newbie to LOS, only been once for a month in May/June this year. For me the forum was an invaluable source of information in preparing for my journey.
The forum made me feel very well prepared indeed. I had lots of info on which bars and a-go-gos to visit, which MP's to check out, what was a reasonable price to pay the girl, info on money exchange, simple tips like booking a double versus a single, etc etc.
I don't think anyone misses out on those surprises by being well informed. What I found was that there were many surprises waiting even though I was well informed.
My time in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya would probably not have been as much fun if I wasn't armed with the relevant information.
This form is a fantastic source of information for the newbie. After a month in LOS I now feel like an old hand, learned so much and looking forward to my return probably in December.

I think having too much information forced down your throat does take away some of the sense of exploration, the thrill of the unknown, and the excitement of discovery and learning.
The first time I came to Bangkok (slightly over 10 years ago) there was very little information available unless you really went looking for it (and I wasn't). I like exploring the streets, just wandering and checking out various random things and the first time I walked through bangkok I enjoyed the many surprises and puzzles that came up. I did know vaguely where Soi Cowboy was and had read a bit about Darling MP. At the time I had a GF so I wasn't interested in much, but wanted to see what I was missing. But I really had little clue what to expect and certainly couldn't visualize them.
It was even somewhat a little thrill when the first guy approached me trying to get me to walk into his MP across the street. In retrospect it was probably Atami, but at the time I had absolutely no clue there were any MPs that close. On a later trip I let a guy in PP take me to a "close" MP, something I would never do today, but at the time I didn't know exactly where they were so I didn't have much choice. If I went for the first time these days, I would have the map in hand, with lists of prices and reviews on everything and there would be few surprises.
On my first trip I never did find SC. I probably walked by it two or three times during the day and never knew it existed.
The trick is that each person should just get enough involved in the board to make sure they have a good time without knowing too much. Every time I come back I read a new thread or review on a place and kick myself for not reading about it before my trip. But there are always so many new things to try that I never get around to all of them anyway, so it really doesn't matter.

Ah... and another perspective. Clearly we share somewhat similar veiws on this.
That is not to say there is a right way or a wrong one, of course. And as a general rule; I believe knowledge is by definition, a good thing.

While discovery is always great fun in and of itself, I've found that the information on the forum hasn't in the least diminished my fun-factor in LOS.
In fact, there is far more info here than I've had time to "use" in LOS. On my last trip, I enjoyed "rediscovering" some of the places I'd read (but forgotten) about, and the line kept going through my head, "so THAT'S where it is!" Followed, of course, by a big smile.
