At the risk of appearing to be guilty of my own accusations.... (by posting twice in succession on the same thread) I did a quick survey of those (beside BK) who have posted on this thread. Most have been a member for a shorter period that I (Some with thousands of posts), and all have been members for less than a year. Pretty new I would say.

CAdan I don't think that's the trade-off we were talking about. We don't have to solve all problems with the same tool. We may just want to get to know somebody a little bit before they post a new thread. They have to read some threads, post some, watch the results, and during this process they get to know us a little bit too. And it creates a time/effort barrier to someone creating a personality just to start a new thread just to get everyone riled up. Noone is saying newbies don't have good stuff to say, or may not know as much about LOS as the members of this board. Noone is saying that their aren't nutball members with alot of posts who still often start idiotic threads. Those would be false assertions on their face. Are you pretending that we are saying that? You should know better if you have been a member for so long.

1) I have not been a member for so very long... less than a year. 2) Don't ask me questions on the forum, PM me. That way, if I do not see the Q on the forum, I will surely see it on my PM. 3) I am not really sure what your question is? Am I pretending to do what???? I will send this same response by PM.

I think questions directed to specific members in open forum are entirely valid as part of a public dialogue. They are MEANT to be observed. PMs are for wholly private conversations. In an ideal world, there should be no restrictions on newbies or anyone else. All this is in reponse to a practical problem which had become a real pain. BK It seems to me that one of the reasons newbies may be reluctant to post in old threads rather than create new ones is that they fear their posts will simply get lost. It's not an unreasonable fear when they can see that threads have been dormant for weeks, if not months. Would it help to spell out that any new message will come up on the recent posts facility and has just as much chance of drawing a response as one starting a new thread?

Arcadius - thanks man I thought I was going crazy there for a minute. And I agree with you about the old thread thing. But my first post was on an old thread because I didn't know about the last 25 screen for a while. (man that was a eye opener - seeing the posts in real time) And a thread was revived. And it was cool that people picked up a conversation that had paused for 9 months and just started jabbering away again with new insights info humor etc. I think you are right that people start a new thread because they want attention/an answer. But why can't they wait for a little probationary learning period first. Not a big deal. I am also aware of adverse selection. This is an idea in banking that says the longer the application/the more documentation u require/ leads to bad risks not good. The people with good credit just don't have the patience to put up with the bullshit and more importantly - they don't HAVE to. The fear of a high hurdle is that we drive away potential members that would be valuable pleasant and informative interlocutors. Right now there is no hurdle. The question is - what is the downside risk if there is a hurdle? And forchrissakes the got there own section called newbiequestions already for example (I could pull ten like this from the last week or so) - new thread in Travel section brain222 - 2 posts total http://bkkx.com/cgi-bin/forum/topic.cgi?forum=27&topic=87&start=0

Quote: from eyeswideopen on 10:00 pm on June 22, 2003 BK - is it possible to limit the right to create a new topic thread until someone posts, like, more than 20 (or whatever) times? This will help people how to learn search and index to find an existing appropriate thread to post in
The another way to reduce the number of new idiotic threads. Allow the member to create new threads only after being a member for a specific duration, say 2 weeks or 1 month. Additionally, I can set up a "catch-all" thread for Newbies to post their questions (since they won't be able to create new threads, and this would also reduce the possiblity of asking questions in inappropriate locations). If that question is really interesting, then the contents will be copied out and a New thread is created. The one other feature of this forum that encourages one to make as many silly posts as possible, is that there is no limit to the number of posts you can make. Suppose, you started out with an allocated number of posts, say 50, and once it is used up, you have to wait for a period before you get allocated again another 50 posting units, that will definitely discourage users from posting abundantly. One could earn them by writing great field reports like AFM's or provide information such as Pinga's (okay, he gets a lifetime of posting privileges). In line with this system, posting will cost you one unit, but creating a thread (and that's after the probation period) will cost you 10 units, say. So, one will think twice before creating a thread.

Is that the same mouse that had clogs on? A Windmill In Old Amsterdam --------------------------------------- A mouse lived in a windmill in old Amsterdam A windmill with a mouse in and he wasn't grousin' He sang every morning, "How lucky I am, Living in a windmill in old Amsterdam!" Chorus: I saw a mouse! Where? There on the stair! Where on the stair? Right there! A little mouse with clogs on Well I declare! Going clip-clippety-clop on the stair Oh yeah This mouse he got lonesome, he took him a wife A windmill with mice in, it's hardly surprisin' She sang every morning, "How lucky I am, Living in a windmill in old Amsterdam!" Chorus First they had triplets and then they had quins A windmill with quins in, and triplets and twins in They sang every morning, "How lucky we are Living in a windmill in Amsterdam, ya!" Chorus The daughters got married and so did the sons The windmill had christ'nin's when no one was list'nin' They all sang in chorus, "How lucky we am Living in a windmill in old Amsterdam!" Chorus A mouse lived in a windmill, so snug and so nice There's nobody there now but a whole lot of mice. It's so funny you got to listen to it http://www.twisteds-world.co.uk/windmill_song___.htm
