I see other forums place a message such as 'Edited at such and such a time' I think we all post things that we regret - I dont think our mistakes should be indelible.

I do not think that it is a good thing when a post contains several posterior modifications, even if the date and time of the editing are mentioned. It doesn’t facilitate the reading of those posts. When a newspaper publishes an erroneous information, there is no step backward, but only corrective articles and errata. If the “edit” function is suppressed, it would (for example) avoid that a person abuses this possibility in order to continue controversies when his quota of daily posts is already used. Moreover, some people use this technique (post-editing) after they have placed another member in their "ignore" field, and therefore, they can hold slanderous and untrue statements (and sometimes insults also) within their previous posts without the “ignored” member knows about what was being added. This phenomenon already occurred more than once in the past and will probably happen again. These are some of the reasons why I think that the suppression of this functionality could be a good thing. In the non-controversial and non-litigious cases, I think that the moderators could exceptionally be solicited to apply slight corrections such as, for example, a typo error in an address or in a tariff, but not on the very meaning of the posts.

FG...would the suggestion that you 'edit' your thought process on editing just a touch, be acceptible? The ultimate edit is, simply, to not read at all.

Just dating the edits would effectively undermine those that abuse that function, without removing the ability to edit. It just removes the ability to be dishonest. Harry

Is it possible to make all edits appear in a particular colour that is only used for edits? Cheers

Brocher, Best idea so far! To expand on that thought: Edited Out to appear with a strikethrough and in color with Edited In alongside and in same or different color - somewhat similar to MS Word's 'Track Changes' function. A little programming challenge for the Jedi Master.

Yeah, High-Five to Brocher for this one. I'd think that just having edits flagged in a different color would be a good start. Having them flagged with too many prefix' and suffix' could make for some screwed up texts after a while. Case in point, sometimes I re-read a post from a while back, spot a typo, and correct it - if edits were flagged excessively, any such effort would render a post where one word was corrected more and more illegible. The idea is to just pull the carpet out from underneath those that edit their posts to alter their original argument, while claiming they never edited those posts. Harry
