Pls need some info on obtaining a tourist visa for my TGF to visit Japan. It can't be as difficult as getting a tourist visa for the U.S. or is it???

I agree with ROTFLMAO
It is impossible, unless you are Yakuza.
When I tried to get my TGF a US visa, I was living in japan. I thought it hilarious when the US consul advised it I can get a Japan visa, then the US would probably give her a visa.
When I wanted to visit, she was able to get a Korea visit, and so we met there. That is a short flight from japan

On the immigration Web site http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/ under part V there's a PDF file which she can use to apply for a visitor's visa. Notice there's a place for 'guarantor' (that's YOU - assuming you've got residency in Japan yourself). Somewhere on that site I've seen a simple form for a person to sign, basically guaranteeing that you'll be responsible for your visitor and he/she won't be working in Japan, which MIGHT also be necessary.
Interestingly about 50 countries have visa waiver agreements for Japan but virtually NONE from within Asia for reasons which you might understand if you live here like me. As it happens they're really easy on visas right now for people who want to go to the Aichi Expo' so that might work in your favour.
