Dear expat and jumpinjack: I am quite aware of his stats. But he throws too many int's and many returned for touchdowns (although he is doing better this year). I am not saying he is the worst player, just the most over-rated. BTW, the second most over-rated player in NFL history is Dan Marino, who also throw a lot of int's returned for TD's. IMO, a great QB must make very few mistakes and int's are big mistakes. Int's returned for TD's are the most devastating play in (American) football. A lot of those stats are accumualted because of the number of games played. The old guys like Unitas only played 12 per season and one NFL championship game if they made it that far (for most of his career). Even Bradshaw did not play as many games per year as they do now. As for 100% disagreement with NFL players, I can guarantee you that at least a few agree with me. After all, one can be the second best player in history and also be the most over-rated if eveyone thinks he is the best (although I don't think he is anywhere near the second best QB in history). Over-rated is not the worst, just over-rated. But he is entertaining to watch.

Mr. Alan: I won't confuse you with facts since your mind is made up. Let me just refer you to this web site so you can peruse the various records held by the alleged overrated QB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brett_Favre#records_and_milestones If, after reading these statistics, you still feel he is overrated, then please post accordingly. I will refrain from any other attempt to convince you since you will have lost all touch with reality. Oh, while I am thinking about it...you say a lot of his stats accumulated because of the number of games played. Wouldn't this apply to interceptions as well?

The Atlanta Falcons traded him for a draft pick they used to take Tony Smith, Brett's college halfback at Southern Mississippi. The Falcon's head coach, Jerry Glanville, said at that time that Favre was "too fat, drank too much, and didn't know the plays". I'd say Brett did all right. I don't think many are claiming he's the greatest ever, but many people admire him for his toughness. He's a high risk/high reward player, that's his style. Meanwhile, Tony Smith scored 2 touchdowns in a 33-game NFL carreer: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/SmitTo00.htm Has to be one of the greatest trades in the history of sports.

Everyone has their own opinion on these matters, but I am firm believer that you win more often with a Bart Starr type of QB who does not make mistakes, then you do with a guy who puts it up for grabs on every play. Bart Starr lead the Packers to five NFL titles (including the first 2 Super Bowls), a record among NFL quaterbacks. Favre has only one title to his name, and Marino (another guy in the record books who put it up for grabs and had huge stats) never got a single NFL title. Starr, a 17th round draft choice of the Green Bay Packers in 1956, was not considered to be a great passer, but he was smart and made very few mistakes, the hallmark of a great QB.

Starr was a fine field general, but had such a great supporting cast, there wasn't as much pressure for him to make a play. I remember going to a Packer game as a kid, when Starr was injured (missed half the season), and they still won easily with a terrible backup named John Roach. The Packers only had 2 winning seasons in the 25 years before they got Favre, and only one losing season since. He turned the team around, almost single-handedly.
