Came for a couple months when I was nineteen, ended up staying for 16 months. Went back to US, returned after a few years. Been here since for a total of 17 years. Really freaks me out to see that in writing. Where did the time go?

my business takes me to thailand since 1993. since 3 years i am residing in bangkok permanently but still have another residence back in europe. have to travel back on constant business trips but pisses me off the very moment i take off at dong muang. hopefully i can fully retire here in the next 2-3 years. but as long as i have to work for a living i will still have to leave thailand for about 120-150 days a year. god i will never be able to cope again with europe. as said before even they do not really like us here it is far better in thailand than being harassed by governments, taxes , women etc. in the western world.

Not sure it's just a LOS thing. Arrived in Hong Kong 20 years ago - just for 2 years - and still here. Think it's an Asian thing. When you're hooked on Asia there's just nowhere else you want to be. Europe? Well, it's ok for the short visit but it's the buzz of Hong Kong, BKK, Manila, even the Chinese cities like Shanghai.....and the women......as someone once said: "the most beautiful women in Asia are always in the country you happen to be in". Have averaged 4-5 trips a year to LOS on business and pleasure - must have spent a couple of my 20 years there. Always get that buzz arriving at Don Muang..then down to Suk. Would I want to live in BKK?....not sure I could handle it....just yet! But my respects to you guys who can and do!

I am not at all convinced that the Thais don't like us here, within certain limits. They certainly don't want to be colonized, or culturally swamped, and prefer that we assimilate and become Thai than the other way round. On the other hand you can argue that the Thais don't like the Indians here (they have a mild epithet for them, which translates as "the guests") or that the Thais don't like having the Chinese here (another epithet is available but it is untranslatable). Yet, those communities are so integrated into Thailand and the economy that it is impossible to sort them out in many cases. In the instance of the Thai-Chinese the Thais liken this to a strangler vine living around a durian tree; pretty soon the host and parasite have reached a symbiosis from which there is no escape, they depend on each other for life. They are less positive about the Indians. You all have probably heard the standard line about "If you see a cobra and an Indian, kill the Indian first. The cobra might not bite." Whereas 'farang' is not an epithet, it means European that's all (literally Frenchman, from farangseht = corruption of francais). About as far as things get is to make a joke that calls us potatoes or French fries because of the similar word in Thai for potato, but there is also a similar word for guava and I have never heard of us being called guavas. What you may perceive as antipathy might be from Thais too long in the tourist areas, who are low lifes and maeng da who feed off of tourists like vampires and whose comments are rooted in jealousy and self disgust. Please don't mistake thatr for the attitude of the Thai people!

I lived in Hong Kong for 7 years, and have been going to Thailand for the last 10 years. Now, unfortunately I'm back in the US looking for my chance to move back to Asia. It is an Asian thing, as the previous post says. As for LOS, I've been at least 35 times or more because I can no longer count. I feel I know it pretty well, but I'm always reminded of just how much more there is to learn. And I like to learn...keeps live interested and a challenge unlike the way I feel living in the States...

chateau, I've just been waiting for someone to adress that statement griffin has made at least twice-I should have known it would be you. I'm going to withhold comment for the time being (I'm thinking of a new thread.), but nice post. BTW personally I agree with your account of the derivation of Farang but there is some dissension on that amongst scholars. I would also venture that in addition to the symbiotic relationship you correctly pointed out, any antipathy towards Chinese would be hard to maintain simply because of the fact that so much of the elite has at least at least some Chinese blood; including the PM and you know who! It is ironic that Thais would have so much disregard for the Indians or any for the Chinese, when one considers how much of "traditional Thai culture" is an amalgamation of the Indian and Chinese. As for being culturally swamped, one could argue that (to some extent) they volunteered for that, and their avoidance of colonisation had more to do with brilliant leadership/diplomacy, and luck than any feirce independence. (I mean where was the vaunted independence in '42?)
