By the way, anecdotally, and at least in the farang-oriented establishments, there is little, almost no routine VD (I mean by that syphilis and/or gonnorhea. When I was still living in the USA I often came down with a NGU and sometimes gonnorhea; NEVER in Thailand. I attribute the difference to the government mandated checking of the nightlife girls in those clinics that some people are so skeptical of.
A VERY DIFFERENT paradigm reigned in Vietnam during the war, both syph and gonnorhea were rampant and in many cases highly resistant to treatment.
For HIV, see my post about the USN blood testing in 1995 of 9000 sex workers in the metro Manila area. While WHO was ballyhooing scare stories about 70% infection rates, the USN found exactly 8 positives in 9000 girls. Now, does anyone want to question the "quality" of USN HIV testing? Or the veracity of the information? For the latter pls contact the Hon.John H.Adams Jr., former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs, of the United States State Dept., now retired, because he';s the one who told me this in '95 when he was Consul General to the Phillipines.
Point is we see the same scare stories from WHO/UNAIDS about Thailand, so are we supposed to believe them here when they LIED to us all in the Phillipines?
Not I. I wouldn't believe WHO now if they told me the sky was blue.

- agreed one "Should" take precautions ... BUT, as likewise I've stated elsewhere, I can point out dozens of TG's on any given night, who I've seen wandering Nana/Thermae/Soi 7 etc. for 8- 10 years, know for a fact they dont always insist on a condom, they eat little, drink and smoke alot, should have an exceptionally low immune system, .... and yet are still going strong ??? Practically any bar you walk into, will have Hostess's in the 30+ bracket, and most have not just started last week ! - Sure, I have also heard of a couple of regular workers who have passed on, due allegedly to the dreaded disease, but in each case, they had a Thai boyfriend who was doing Intravenous drugs ..... - Not condoning anything, but just passing on some facts as I see them.

I tend to agree with thaiprivateeye and CJ on this issue with one added provision to CJ's post;
Yes they carry the little books with stamps, but who can guarantee their validity in every case? None of us. I know for a fact that there have been some cases of stamps being provided without the testing.

I suppose I shouldn't even respond but I've gotten much mellower in my old age, and am no longer so wrapped up in my pride that I can't let things go. Besides, you won me over with the comment about being "balanced" (I guess I'm a sucker for praise.). That is perhaps the ONE value that I think I almost always manage to live up to. I know I probably go on too much for some people's taste but hopefully they will just ignore me.

MrJoe, this being Thailand, you are probably right. However, the verifiable near total absence of routine STDs (in the farang venues) would seem to support the proposition that the system works and works well, and that any evasion such as you describe is minor and small scale.
The near absence of syphilis and gonnorhea does not scientifically mean the same is true of HIV but it does suggest that may be the case.
Long stay guys such as myself see the same BGs on the same stools more or less year after year and decade after decade. So, where's the pandemic? Take away the gays and the IV drug users and their spouses, and sorry, not much left. Well, not really sorry.
Yeah the disease has a long latency but, then, we've been here a long time.
Personally I know of ONE HIV death, and THAT was a ladyboy. Hell, I have that many HIV deaths within my own family (back in the states, a gay cousin) so to observe just one case in 15 years among the hundreds and hundreds of sex workers I know personally/professionally/socially, is "anecdotally" very suggestive.
Likewise only 1 case of Herpes in all that time among all my friends and acquaintances.
ZERO syphilis. Maybe 1 case of drippy dick and that could have been NGU/NSU as easily as gonnorhea.
An outside observer would expect Bangkok to be a seething cauldron of STD pathogens.
SOMETHING is succesfully preventing this from happening, despite the barebackers, despite the lousy Thai condoms, and despite no slowdown I can see in sexual activity of all sorts. And let's not forget STDs that are introduced into the sex worker population by visitors from outside the Kingdom. The door swings both ways.
Well, for the routine STDs, it seems that about as soon as a girl gets infected, she gets tested, diagnosed and put on meds. And sits it out till she gets a clean bill of health. And for this to work as well as it seems to, the cheaters must be few and far between.
Any other explanation?

I suggest we deal in truth and fact (well, opinion anyway) and leave balance to the scribblers of the mass media.
If everytime we say "Oranges are round" we have to qualify it with some silly shit like "On the other hand, the laws of nature do not necessarily exclude the possibility of trapezohedral oranges" then we will never get anything said and, besides, that's merely stupid.
So much for BALANCE.

As I've said before, I tend to agree with you on the non existence of a pandemic (as I do on most issues.).
I don't agree that trying to be balanced necessitates ridiculous rhetoric or over analyzation; I think it's the only way to attain any clarity of thought or expression. Of course one has a right to offer subjective veiws, as we all do, but I think some attempt at objectivity is useful or else communication breaks down (everyone's veiw not being identical) and what do we base our arguments on if not fact? -- Instinct? Feelings? Sometimes I do base my veiws on these, but I try to specify that is what it is; I realize that I am not infallible and I need to remind myself of that lest my my veiws are (too) distorted by subjectivity.
BTW JJ is clearly a brain surgeon, of that there can be no doubt.

Truth and fact require no additional balance, they are balanced as a given, inherently balanced. Nor does opinion require balance to be reasonable.
If something is true then you can only "balance" it with falsity, and then it wouldn't be true anymore, just balanced. And that would be a pity.
Balance is overrated.
Anyway, I always suspected that JJ looks like Professor Gumby of Monty Python fame. Gum boots, hanBKerchief on head, the lot. "My brain hurts. It's got to come out!"
