When I first got hooked on Thailand back in 1993, the bargirl I picked up and started a 'relationship' of sorts with was one of those dumb but fun ones.
She was particularly sad one day so I asked what was wrong, she said 'I miss my mum, I haven't seen her for 2 years' and started crying.
Next day we took the ferry back over to the mainland and took a minibus 4 hours to Trang to visit mum.
That was it for me, the simple rural life and basic living hooked me and I stayed there for 6 years.....
Till her alcholism was too much to bare, so I left....
There were of course other reasons too, but to many to list here.
When I left she was well set up with a nice little house with the family shop in front, motorbikes, and money in her bank... Yet 6 months later she was seen working in a bar in Krabi.
It is an old story I know but the old adage is true 'you can take a girl out of the bar, but not the bar out of the girl' it is quite simply the easiest way to get coin, and if lucky a laugh too.
I am not sad mind you, I am happily married to a Hairdresser now and get free haircuts and manicures...

I saw that and it was really straight shooting when she spoke about how the thai men are shouting her about her customers and how she feels towards them.
It was in the end of doc, when the man came back and found her working in the "Happy House" and asking her why she came back.
"It was my destiny" she explained.
There was a steady stream of those documents coming out in early 90's.
Those already mentioned I have one telling a british man, who thought that marying a thai girl would be good for him.
The story paints a picture, where everything twisted into terrible chaos, the man losing vast sums of money and afterall the girl dumping him and flying back home.
He describes the effort being "a great mistake" and the bitterness shows.
Other tells about Pattaya and how the things are running in there and giving a really shitty description about men visiting there.
The ones, who were interwiewed for it, were mostly fat, drunk, walking around shirtless and full of beer bravado.
Made by "Feminazi productions" ; I'd say.
Last was about the sexual abuse of the underaged in Pattaya and a lot of it was shot using hidden cams and recorders.
Included was also a scene, where the "special unit" hit the Dongtan beach to arrest THE UNDERAGED ONES.
Method was explained :"We hit there and everybody, who runs, has something to hide".
Massive moves including the jetskis curving in from the seaside and wave of cops from both sides rushed in.
Cuffed ones were lined there for cams and the foreigners checked and booked their ID's befrore shooing them away.
But the raid in the paedo's room hit gold. Evidence there and photos confiscated, man arrested.
Too bad the embassy gave him a new passport and he flew home.
I call most of those documents "Blackpainters specials" their meaning to give a huge, black eye to Thailand.

I notice the film is noted everywhere I look as 82 minutes. My version seems to be 75.
Film and TV frame rates differ slightly, that may account for it if it was originally shot on film and you taped it off TV. Movies on TV often run shorter, even without editing, than in the cinema.
Also there is no point in painting a positive picture in any documentary of subjects like this as it degrades the drama and appeal.

Actually there are a group of young Aussie pricks in the film who profess that they frequent the bars to further the future of Thailand.
"These girls send money home to further the eduction of the young. In years to come, this wont exist, that's why we come here". They finish with a rousing "GO AUSTRALIA". Very spiritual.

Watch the film again Yurune. Its been a while since I watched it but at least the Aussies see the girls as people and understand what they do and why they do it. They even say "you have to admire these girls for what they are prepared to do for their family" or something similar. And they are somewhat "sheepish" about their own behaviour.
The two interviews before them feature a European whose bar girl actually starts to cry as he grabs her face and points her toward the camera, he is totally oblivious to the humiliation he is causing her...she escapes the camera and he is still none the wiser....the other interview features a guy with an American accent yelling into the mircrophone about how he has slept with "9 women in 5 days and this place is incredible" or words to that effect.
As for Dennis O'Rourke...his marriage went bust, he goes to Bangkok, plays the bars and finances the whole thing (and a return trip) with a "spiritual" film insight into Bangkok.
The only honesty in the film was the 3 drunken Aussies you see as "pricks".
GO AUSTRALIA! Enjoy.

Finally managed to get a copy of this to watch from Yurune, shit NO more P4P from Oz, terrible, oh the shame. Just as many pricks around in 1991 as now!
Seriously very thought provoking, all the bits you don't want to know about P4P, not much has changed I guess. Wonder what happened Aoi, on second thoughts I don't really want to know!
