Yes, Abrak, perhaps you're right that honest sponsorship is an easier concept to grasp than marriage. At least with a TG you know their motivation from the outset.
I can possibly understand this if you live in LOS. But if the guy goes back to his country and pays the girl bt15,000 a month for life in exchange for her supposed fidelity, then yes, I inherently think that that guy is stupid.

I have lived in Thailand for 10 years and while I have never ever sponsored a girl, I understand why they do it.
Now if the above argument doesnt make any sense, perhaps this argument will. If you dont understand how a TV works, I wont come to you to discuss how to fix it.

Bull, try not to be so narrow minded.
Lets say you are 65 year old guy with lots of money who lives in America. You come to Thailand you meet a gorgeous 20 something girl and you sponsor her Bt10,000/month basically on condition that she is with you for the six weeks a year that you are in Thailand. Now of course she says she is faithful to you but you dont believe her, she also says you are 'still handsome man'.
Is this guy really stupid or is he entering a vaguely mutually beneficial arrangement? I mean he gets a thrill out of having a gorgeous 20 something girl with him on his holidays and maybe even a little thrill that he is enriching her life in some way. The fact that the 20 something Thai guy who is shagging her while she is away, thinks he is totally stupid is beside the point.

Anyone who has been married can sympathise with that view. Afterall, you pay a shed load of money (in my case US$1k/day for every day we were married) in order to get out of a relationship which we enter with the best of intentions.
And if anyone wants to point out that I was stupid to get into that relationship in the first place can 'f*** right off'. At least I had the honesty and intelligence to admit my mistake.

I personally think sponsorship is foolish but I cannot possibly know all the situations and rationalizations a man might have.
I do know that for some guys, especially older fellows, 20,000B/mo is not even pocket change. Add to that the fact that this gorgeous girl who is probably younger than his daughter gave him several evenings of delight that were far beyond anything he ever imagined he would experience and you can understand his loss of reason and overflowing generosity.
Lots of men would give a substantial portion of their net worth for one night with Naomi Campbell. So $500/month is a bargain.

500us a month can get you only a jungle girl. the hot "good" girls go for a lot more. just last night a nep bargirl told me she had a sponsor for 2 months, a japanese guy who sent her 900 us a month to retire from bar, she told him politely to go to hell, she make more money hooking in her bar...lol

Good concept but a hurdle could be that many of the ladies being considered do not grasp the concept of "contract". Take for example a mobile phone... many have a contract for service but if they can't pay, they usually walk away. No remorse or concern for bad credit rating - they just walk away until they can sign up again later.
I think the contract for sponsorship would suffer the same fate. The TG's would keep to terms for as long as they see the value but in the event they have a problem or perceive a better situation, I think they would walk away from it.
Unlike many here, I think sponsoring is fine but one must always manage the expectations. Knowing the girl for more than a weekend should be a requirement before the sponsorship is contemplated. I continue to believe BG's are like any other women (Thai or otherwise) - they are way smarter than men and much better at lying if they want to.
Also, IMO, we falang males have a very justified image of being butterflies. Why would they believe that we would honor a contract?

Surely the commonly accepted view is that polygamy relates to having more than one marriage partner, extending this to other species is a streatch (IMHO) but for the purposes of this thread....
As I understand it, for many people in some societies, the concept of polygamy is altruistic. The man marries the additional women if he has enough wealth (including a suitable house, posessions etc.) so that they will be taken care of. It's not the case that the man just wants to have many girls, he is actually being benevolent. In many cases the additional women are chosen by the first wife who sometimes selects a sister, cousin etc.,
