I tell the people that ask that I go for relaxing, the sights and the girls -- when I get raised eyebrows when they hear 'the girls', I remind them that I am on a vacation, and that I am single, and what would they have me do/be instead? I usually get a smile at that point.
I've had one instance of some chick in a bar (overhearing my conversation) asking me point-blank with 'the look' on her face "What do these Thai hussies give you that local girls can't?" I looked her up and down, and the answer was obvious "a hernia!". Yes, she was a typical representative of the farang female.
As for that whole question of 'Why aren't you married yet? Why don't you have children?", that one's easy. "I prefer to remain happy as long as I can, thank you very much".
Chances are the very people that preach to you the virtues of married life, don't have one themselves, or have tons of friends and relatives that have 'marital problems'.
My niece used to bombard me about getting with the program - now that her parents are divorced, that all of her friends' parents are divorced or splitting up, and most others in the family are in the same situation, now I'm the smart one. Go figure

Although I have a work excuse, it really only justifies five or so days from OZ & I've been stretching it to seven or eight for quite a while now.
However, the last two years or so I've worked on a long trip for the future (for me anyway 20-25 days) attached to a business trip.
I have invited my significant other as well, but as the details of the hiking, canoeing & living rough sink in she has managed to avoid booking, talking instead of meeting up with me at some resort or other country toward the end of my tour.
She sees me preparing physically, studying maps & reading adventure tour literature. I talk about the trip with some enthusiasm, & her eyes just glaze over.
BTW if she did come, I think it would be a good holiday anyway.
I am collecting jpegs from the net, eg:Thailand Photo, Virtual Tourist etc sites, which will be the basis of my 'holiday snaps'.
Fact is I really will do some of these things, but not so rough, with appropriate company, & sandwiched between liberal slabs of P4P.
Taking an interest in Thailand, not just BKK, PTY will give you some ideas.
As for what other brothers mentioned about the stigma some people attach to Thailand, once you hit them with this adventure stuff, & perhaps take your wife on a holiday there in, say, Phuket, it will tend to go away.
Frankly, I bore my wife's friends senseless taiking about Thailand, & that also seems to work - just leave out the good stuff LOL.

Cannot say it better. That's exactly the way to go. There is no other option.
All that talking about sights and temples and architecture will not help a little bit. If you are somehow educated (what I assume) and thus your surrounding is, then your mates and family are clever enough to exactly figure out whats going on.
There is no doubt about it, no chance to mask or cover up: You are single white male, a smart guy and at a somehow sexually active age (whatsoever this is!).
Maybe you can use the temple and architecture excuse once, but thats it.
Don't discuss it, don't even talk about it. Have a good story, some photos, know about the currency and current issues about Hongkong, Singapore or whereever you "will go for holiday".

Well thanks to everyone for all the thoughts, I appreciate it. I am tending to agree with those of you who just say your going for relaxation and leave it at that. I try to not bring it up at the office, but the guy next to me heard me booking tickets and of course yelled it out (his death is nih 
I agree that the answer to not being married or having kids is cause I want to be stay happy. Anyway there were a lot of intersting reads in this thread so thanks again.

I think Fenris might be a little bit too paranoid.
For those that think of Thailand solely as a p4p destination, there is nothing you can say to them. But I have found that, in the US, most people do not think of a vacation to Thailand as strictly for prostitution. Those who have not been here (and some that HAVE been here) think that there are tons of other things to do here (golf, diving, hiking, touring, temples, pool bars, night markets, shopping, river cruises, beaches, cooking schools, etc.) that do not involve p4p. A tourist could make a long vacation out of the above activities. Guess what? Most people who come to Thailand for vacation do the above things and do not hang out in bars in Pattaya.
As for the "naughty nightlife", point to Patpong's tourist sex shows and saying "for a laugh, I sometimes go there".
Doing some of the above things might make your trip more enjoyable... this is a long way to travel just to get laid.

Well I don't tend to carry around my passport to show my friends and co-workers... A wife or girlfriend would be a problem, but most of my visits to Thailand/Laos have been to see my Lao Girl AKA Future wife.
