The pads and helmets make it a much more dangerous game. I have played tackle football many times without any gear, and no one is stupid enough to use their head as a spear, like the players with helmets do.

Mr. Alan I guess you never seen a Rugby match. I call a spade a spade. Rugby is much tougher than American football. Now as for soccer. Just a bunch of pansies that did not make the cut for ballet team. The only tough part about soccer is being in the stands with the fans.

Anybody want to bet that Favre is elected to the NFL Hall of Fame on his first ballot? I say..."yes". What say you, Alan?

Expat, I knew those posts of mine would flush you out. There are currently 23 "modern era" QB's in the NFL Hall of Fame. (Modern Era is defined as a majority of a members' career that occurred after 1946.) I suspect that the majority of them (or maybe even all of them?) made it on the first ballot. If we add one more (Favvraa), and put him in the middle of this esteemed group, that would make him number 12. That is being pretty generous IMO, but I am a nice guy, and you are a gentleman, so I will go along with that.

I have seen many rugby matches, especially in the early days of ESPN (early 1980's) when they didn't have much programming available to them, and lots of air time. I agree that rugby is a tough sport, but they rarely use their heads as spears, like those in the NFL with helmets. This can backfire when the head stays protected by the helmet, but the neck is broken by the impact. I doubt that it happens in rugby as much as in American football.

Quote from Mr Alan"The pads and helmets make it a much more dangerous game. " Ok, so the PROTECTIVE gear makes it more dangerous,,,,I'm trying to understand this concept,,,,,is it like NOT wearing a helmet on a motor-bike helps save damage to the road??? I guess you are trying to say that the attempt at head protection was twisted in designed that in fact it has become a weapon. Will they allow spikes to be added ? So I guess the new Carbon Fibre pads will be anti- spike helmet etc etc. Why not just play man on man aka Rugby League. Let's moove a little side-ways,, Ice hockey,, now THAT'S a Sport that needs pads and helmets,, those f***ers are MAD and have sticks and blades, not to mention the walls. Mel

Yes, it is a bit of a paradox. I am saying that an American football player will do violent things in a game if he is wearing a helmet, that no one would ever do if they were playing the same game without a helmet. I know this because I have played football without a helmet (no jokes please), as have most Americans when they were younger. The football helmets used today are incredibly well-engineered to protect the head in even the most violent encounter (such as a collision with another helmet). The problem is that, even though it happens only occasionally, such violent collisions can produce neck injuries that are fatal or that result in the player being paralyzed. Such serious injuries are rarely encountered with people playing football without a helmet, or even when playing rugby. Certainly, rugby players suffer injuries, and even bleed a lot (from my recollection of the games I watched). But not many life-threatening injuries in rugby. In the early days of American football, college and professional teams had helmets that provided little protection (they were basically leather hats), and the number of serious injuries to head and neck, or the number of cases of players becoming paralyzed, was far less than it is today (even on a pro-rata basis).

That would be obvious Mr. Alan. With all of the armor these days a football player does not have to 'pay a penalty in pain' for charging someone at full force. That usually leads to more injuries to the 'hittee' especially if he is unaware that the hit is coming (i.e. looking the other direction on a cut). The nice thing about rugby is that you can hit as hard as you want, just as long as you are ready to take as much pain as you give out...
