Bad news!
I was on the State Department web site and saw that they listed 180 day wait times for K1 visas! In the hope that this was an error I emailed the Embassy.
Sent: Monday, June 27, 2005 10:04 AM
To: consularvienti@state.gov
Subject: K1 Visa interview wait times.
On the state department web site it stated that the average wait for an interview is 180 days. Is this an error on the web site? I looked at other countries in the region and the wait times are in weeks if not days, why is your embassy so much longer?
The response... 
Dear Mr. Compexec1:
Our consular section in Vientiane has experienced unprecedented growth in fiance (e) visa applications over the past six months. We are addressing the situation by adding more staff and more time dedicated to fiance (e) visas. As such, our wait time for an interview is down to about four months. We are working to cut that wait time even further.
If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I was informed by a friend who is an attorney (yes, a contradiction in terms) and regularly deals with the US embassy here, that all visas for US are taking upwards of 6 months due to the unprecendented number of applicants. Business visas are getting first priority and will take less time.
