The course I did at Bletchley Park was so boring that I used to make an excuse to go to the loo and then walk around the pond in front of that famous mansion. Yawning in the field behind while the lecturer droned on I pointed to some aerials in the corner of the field, "What are those?" said I. "EErrham you haven't seen that!" came the reply. At the end of a boring day, manuals under arm, I was leaving chatting to a girl from the course. We were on an elevated pathway that passed by some nissan huts. Due to the elevation of the path the individuals in the rest room located there could quite easily see our feet. I was wearing a long navy Italian coat at the time with epulettes. I immediately broke into my finest goosestep copying the Soviet Guard outside Lenin's Tomb. Much mirth ensued ! Then I saw the name on the huts = 'Central Training School' which was the training school for GCHQ the electronic spies ! Luckily they had a sense of humour as exactly a year later the Soviets shot down Korean Flight 007 over Sakhalin Island. What I found a bit spooky was the flight number of that B747 = 007 !
There is a postscript to this. In the earlier part of 1982 I used to drink in a pub near Richmond Green. There was a tall very bright German girl who used to work there. One evening while the Falklands war was raging she told me that she had been sitting on a bench on Richmond Green earlier in the day. A very well dressed elderly man came and sat on the same bench. After a short while he suddenly turned to her and said in a well spoken voice,"What is this about the Russians invading Britain ?" She was stunned as he did not seem a nutter. I have often wondered who HE was and what prompted the outburst ? Happily those days are in the past.

I wonder if spies really do pass messages to each other as they sit on park benches. I always thought that this was simply the work of fiction writers. About 20 years ago, I was walking in the center of Melbourne. It was late at night and I was the only person about, and there was no traffic. On the other side of the street, two men dressed in trenchcoats and carrying briefcases, approached each other from opposite directions. They ducked into a shop doorway, exchanged briefcases, and continued on their way. I thought that perhaps they were actors, but there were no cameras, or any other signs. I walked around the block and returned, but there was no sign of any activity. If it was a practical joke, then it was for an audience of one. It still puzzles me to this day.
Although I am sure it was unintentional, I agree that Ms Deby has provided one of the most interesting and funny threads so far.
