Am curious about the rights of mrs. atl in Thailand though. My wife and I have talked about the green card vs citizen thing, as we are concerned about her being able to buy property and build a retirement place for her when she gets older. Does retaining the Thai passport also mean dual citizenship? If not, then I wonder how property ownership is affected.

Your wife, even if she is a citizen of another country can own property in her name. She must maintain her Thai citizenship and ID card, however.
The law was changed perhaps ten years ago so Thai wives of farangs could own property. Before that, they could not.

I don't want to sound cynical, but for the vast majority of Indians it means they have many more choices about applying for jobs in the US (mostly in IT), and also important is that they can go home to India for a few weeks each year and be assured that they can get back into the US after their trip home. This is not as trivial as you many think for persons without a US passport.
Better check the Indian visa laws Mr. Alan.... they changed last month.
Believe me that it is not as simple to truck back to India whenever you want anymore.
I have a colleague who is Indian with a Sri Lankan mother. He got Auzze citizenship when he went to Uni in Melbourne and when the company (a US MNC) needed to send him to India for a meeting recently he applied for a visa and was refused.... in fact he was told he was henceforth blacklisted.
Not sure why but some suspect it is because of his Sri Lankan mother...

To all "Yanks," you will get a kick out of this for sure. My daughter just got her citizenship and US passport last week and celebrated her first Christmas in America today.
She got ready for bed and just gave me the biggest hug and was tearing up on my shoulder as she said, "daddy, merry christmas and thank you for bringing me to America!" I ain't gonna lie, I got all verklempt lol!
