Quote: from Mr Alan on 12:19 pm on Nov. 2, 2007 I am firm believer that you win more often with a Bart Starr type of QB who does not make mistakes, then you do with a guy who puts it up for grabs on every play.
I don’t really want to knock Bart Starr, he was good enough for his day and time. But if your knock on Favre is the number of INT’s he throws the comparison is weak if you really look at the numbers of Starr. The game was far different back then and the number of passes attempted/completed were only about half of what an average QB in the game today would throw so pretty much any modern day QB will end up with more total INT’s than the old time QB’s. A better comparison therefore is the number of INT’s per attempt/ per completion/ etc. And Starrs numbers are worse than Favres in every possible combination. Starr/ Favre: Attempts: 3149 / 8,497 Completions: 1,808/ 5,202 Yards: 24,718/ 59,546 TD: 152/ 425 INT: 138/ 279 Now lets look at each category per INT: Attempts: Starr – for just under every 23 attempts Starr had an INT Favre – over 30 attempts for every INT Completions: Starr – one INT for every 13 completions Faver – over 18 completions for every INT Yards: Starr – 179 yards for every INT Favre – over 213 yards for every INT TD’s: Starr – 1.1 TD for every INT Favre – 1.5 TD for every INT You can say what you want about Farve putting the rock up for grabs – but the stats show that Starr was worse. Lombardi was no dummy looks like he knew the flaws for Starr he found it was better just to have him hand off the ball so he could not throw and INT? Out of the 16 years Starr played ball he threw more INT’s than TD’s in half of them. Favre on the other hand is now on his 17th season and has only managed that feat in four. Look at the stats Starr made more mistakes than Favre, but Starr had a top coach, and top notch supporting cast; something that Favre has not had consistently.

Quote: from thaiaficionado on 11:38 pm on Nov. 1, 2007 Starr was a fine field general, but had such a great supporting cast, there wasn't as much pressure for him to make a play. I remember going to a Packer game as a kid, when Starr was injured (missed half the season), and they still won easily with a terrible backup named John Roach. The Packers only had 2 winning seasons in the 25 years before they got Favre, and only one losing season since. He turned the team around, almost single-handedly.
It is easy, but misleading, to quote stats like that. Before Starr arrived the Packers were the worst team in football. I am not saying Starr was a great passer. To win championships you need a QB who does not make mistakes. Favre and Marino made too many mistakes IMO. I am not saying either of these two were terrible QB's, just that they are overrated. Despite the fact that they each hold many NFL records between them, I would not rate either of them in the top ten QB's of all time.

I will give you my top 15. 1. Joe Montana 2. Johnny Unitas 3. Otto Graham 4. Terry Bradshaw 5. Roger Staubach 6. John Elway 7. Tom Brady (not done yet) 8. Troy Aikman 9. Bob Griese 10. Dan Fouts 11. Sid Luckman 12. Peyton Manning (not done yet) 13. Sammy Baugh 14. Bart Starr 15. Norm Van Brocklin If Favre had played his entire career like this year (unlike last year when he didn't give a damn about winning) he probably would have made my top 15 (barely). Favre is a loser. Even Mary dumped him.

Mel: I would offer a simple solution to your problem with this thread. One you have offered many members in the past. If it offends you so much...stop clicking on the thread and reading it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out, now, does it?

1. I started this thread. 2. Likely I know more about this topic than others posted here but explaining would out a board member. 3. I apologize for asking the question. 4. I did not get an answer. 5. Doubtful that others on this BANGKOK forum care about top NFL qbs. 6. If any of these qbs are spotted in Bangkok or marries a Thai woman then I change my opinion. 7. Favre is among the top 5 of all time, in most EXPERTS opinions. End of discussion.

I would bet money that most of the modern day QB's on that list have been to LOS at least once.

From the description of Favre on this list, this expert loves the guy and only rated him 8th, One ahead of Brady (which will obviously change very soon so Favre would be 9th by the time Brady retires) : http://motownsportsrevival.blogspot.com/2007/01/top-50-football-players-of-all-time.html This list does not even have Favre in the top 10: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/0608/gallery.NFLclutchqbs/content.1.html ESPN's Chadiha rates Favre 6th, and Jaws only rates Favre 7th (see audio links on right side of this page) : http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3037656 Stats are ridiculous. Just because a guy stays around and plays for a long time and racks up big numbers does not make him a great QB. The modern game has changed the rules to favor passing (sells more tickets) and they now play more games than before (as late as the early 1960's, a team that won the NFL title only played 13 games--now it is 19 or 20 games depending on whether you get a first round bye in the playoffs). And more important, being a great passer does not necessarily mean they are great QB, there is a lot more to it than that. A lot of these lists exclude the old-timers, which is wrong in my opinion. I think you have to rate them in the context of their day, and not on an absolute scale. For example, here is a summary of Otto Graham' achievements: "Otto Graham is considered by many historians to be one of the greatest winners in the history of professional sports. Graham played six seasons in the NFL and took the Cleveland Browns to the NFL Championship Game all six seasons, winning three NFL titles. Including four seasons in which his team captured four AAFC titles [before the Browns joined the NFL in 1950], Graham played ten total seasons of professional football and made the league championship game all ten seasons, winning seven league titles. In his single season as a professional basketball player, the Rochester Royals also captured the league title. Thus, in 11 seasons as a professional athlete, Otto Graham's teams made the championship all eleven years, winning eight titles." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_Graham
