I always leave it doubt free that my girl (MyAfricanQueen i.e.) will never get any "big money" from me. I offer to share a certain part of my standard monthly budget over here when I see her or my travel budget over there (LOS) when seeing someone else which is a fact anyhow, but will never bite into my savings. And she ONLY gets money when I see her. No Western Unioning at all...
That keeps it in natural limits and the girl (MyAfricanQueen that is) always understood this point and it didn't do any harm to our... what is it? relationship? ahh, let's say playground...

Sadly the majority of farangs who get involved with a TG, have absolutely NO idea of Thai culture, way of thinking, language, or in fact the girls real upbringing, her place in the family, or even her true status - i.e. mother, wife, etc..... - the majority of farangs who do have a sound relationship with a TG, be she an ex BG or not, are generally those who have been in LOS for some time, and speak Thai - it does certainly make communication much easier, as of course by and large it is Thai style, to tell the sad farng what he wants to hear, rather than what they [the Thai ] actually thinks. Also, in most cases, the farang throwing the baht around, I find has generally earnt it pretty easy, so its a case of easy come [cum?] easy go usually - case in point an investigation I did for a guy a few months back - he donated a million baht to the girl at the start of the 3 month affair, just as an incentive to have her move in !! - the word of this type of thing soon spreads, so you cant blame others for asking/trying to find someone similar.... bottom line, if you are genuine about a relationship, and she is genuinely keen on you, then in most cases it will work out, and you wont be expected to be a walking ATM -

This should probably go in the "sin sot" threads, but I'll post it here, as TPE brings up a point with the $1M Baht figure.
Couple of weeks ago I'm talking with my TGF on the phone. She informs me that some wayward farang has decided to marry a lady from her village, and so he pledges $1M Baht for the "sin sot." This is waaaay out of line for this village and for the expectations of the TG's from her village.
This has downside for everyone involved, including me. For example, my TGF's dad is pooyaiban. So now there is a face issue for him, as his daughter is hanging with me, who has yet to marry her, and who sure as f_ck is not going to be that stupid with "sin sot." So it upsets the "balance of power" in the village, and depending on how much of the $1M Baht that family actually keeps, puts my TGF's dad's pooyaiban status at risk during the next election. I doubt this dude thought about things like that, but the unintentional ripple effects through the village are profound.
And the ripples spread further. I get a call from her last week, she was out shopping. She informed me that she bought "something you not get for me yet." What was it? A cheap ring to stick on her finger, so that she can feel like she is really engaged to me. She said, "I not put on other finger. That only for when you get for me!" I'm sure this dude's spendeasy habits in her village, and the big celebration, caused her mom to have some serious talks with my TGF. At a time when she has one more year before finishing school, this is the kind of pressure she doesn't need. She knows that if she gets her G.E.D. then we can have serious talks about our joint future, but this whole scenario shorted her out. Not good.
Punters need to think long and hard when throwing money around, especially upcountry. This gets to TPE's point about getting to know the culture, speaking the language, etc. Money has profound effects on the lives of people that have little of it, and it can have a lot of negative consequences if the punter hasn't done his homework.

Well put Balls and TPE.
I think it boils down like this - The vast majority dont know the thai mentality well, or understand the thai pysche. We often like to act like real big shots coz our baht goes so far there - but we often splash around without considering the consequences and act as a walking ATM when we feel like it, and then resent being treated as one the next day.
We cant have it both ways - but thats the way we want it

Ballsburstin has a point,
The saving face concept is complete lost on a lot of farang. They don't think about the consequences of their actions on others. Saving face a major force in every Thais actions. i.e no cuasing others to lose face, and not placing themselves in a lose face position. What that farang did with 1 million baht is blow the number right out the water and cause face issues for many other people. I may have my numbers wrong but he should have been giving about 100,000 baht. If he had even 1% understanding of Thai culture he would have known that he should give 100K and if he wants to give more, He can find other ways to enrich the family that would not cause others in the village to lose face.
BTW and I wrong on that 100K number Ballsburstin?

I wonder why the future Mrs.-Big-Spender didn't explain the concept to him? A communication problem perhaps? If they let the rest of the village know that they'll be returning a big chunk of the sin sot, does that save everybody's face?
