Bucksfun that makes 2 of us!
I too am newbie, I've only been in Siam twice - although it now feels like I should be living there, instead of old gloomy Blighty. Such an odd feeling........
Regarding the accent, mine is easy to reconise as I only speak English as my 3rd language. I'm keen to learn Thai though, how difficult is it to (properly) learn it? How long has it taken you (the expats living in Thailand) to master it? Curious to know.............

Hey Nokna –
Can you shed a light on why Portsmouth football team is nicknamed Pompey? I have always wondered why such a name. One theory I was told goes like this:
"Back in 1934: At a Queen's Birthday Review the Royal Artillery were employed to line the parade instead of marching past. They were chaffed a good deal at being relegated to a job which was, in those days, done in Paris by the Fire Brigade (les Pompiers), and the next time the team turned out they were hailed as 'Pompiers' and the name stuck.”
Without a shade of a doubt the 2003/04 footie season hot ticket are The Blues ( http://www.chelseafc.com/) and now with the Russian connection (no money objection) I look forward for interesting times at Stamford Bridge. Hehehehehe

Great advice, but the problem is there are some many different long hair dictionary publishers in Thailand – would I encounter learning problems if I were to swap brand of dictionaries every week?

i don't think anyone will know the real story,but there is a good theory which holds up.
Portsmouth Harbour is a natural basin and has been used since Roman times.
Goverment ruler of England was called Pompeii and he later gave his name to Pompeii in Italy which was buried by the fall out when Vesuvius erupted.
for the last 500 years Portsmouth has been the base of the British Navy.
Portsmouth has been the launchpad of the British navies battles.
the Spanish Amarda,D-Day,Falklands War etc were started from Pompey.
and the sight of ships returning after a campaign is always on the news.

i might be determined,but i have others to thank for starting me on my quest.
someone suggested a RT,someone else suggested staying overnight and someone else suggested and supplied Thai restaurant addresses.
i just put it all together and got the ball rolling.
i hope all the members who have said they will be attending manage to make it.
will be a largish group and i think an interesting mix if they turn out to be like their characters on the Forum.
someone asked how will be recognise each other?.
Frances will be easy,i understand his avatar is a self-portrait......

chatting to another member who will be attending and it drew me to looking at the website of the restaurant,and it threw up a few questions.
they have private rooms which are available,1 with normal seating,i with cushions on the floor.
both have waterfalls and they can arrange traditional Thai dancing girls to entertain us(extra cost,arm and a leg i would imagine).
or do we want to just sit in the main restaurant?
they have special menus for parties,does this appeal?,or do people just want to order from the menu?.
i'm sorry to say they only have 26 types of cocktails and a large range of spirits and beers.
but only 6 types of soft drink.
shit,that means i will have to partake in the beer.
hopefully they will have Singha.......
so send me your thoughts on what you want,private room(if available) or just the main restaurant.
