why don't you tell us which efficiency percentage a normal vaccine is supposed to achieve to be on market?
May be I am wrong, but a vaccine (for any disease) with 100% efficiency doesn't exist.
Moreover, did you guys know that not even condoms can guarranty 100% protection from HIV?

3cazzi, you're right about the condoms, but are we going to stop humping BG's ?
Of course not, so where does that leave us statistically?

The way I see it, I know about the (small) risk, but I've just accepted it as one of those things, like the 'plane crashing on the way to LOS. You just have to live with it, or go without.

Everything we do carries a small risk - that's part of what makes life so much fun...( motorcycling is a v.good example of this ! )

you got my point...
there is nothing sure and we have to live with it!

So, for a decent quality of life, lets try to use the brain when we take those (small) risks.
Better than to ignore it at all!

Actually, if my plane has to crash, I hope that it's on the way back from LOS.  I'd hate to die and lose a perfectly good vacation.

Thanks all for your contributions. Of course all in life is a risk game and risk makes our adrenaline rush and makes life spicy. If we can avoid a risk let's ask at what cost? If avoiding risk makes our life uninteresting and miserable then the costs are too high... However a lot of people still have to learn more about managing risks like the guys in April in Bangkok: putting a facemask on because they were afraid of SARS and at the same time hopping onto a mototrcycle..and off they went into Bangkok traffic...but of course without helmet....

Rezyek: Unfortunately it's not that easy. The first vaccines have been tested clinically with limited success and the first production center is on the drawing board and will be built in South Korea by Vaxgen. However until an efficient new vaccine has run through all the tests and regulatory compliance is achieved it will still take a couple of years...and until large production units are up and running so that enough of these vaccines are available will still take time (around 6 years). There are thousands of excellent people working flat out to achieve this target.

Wide Spectrum,
do you belong to the team of WaxGen?
I do agree that even condoms do not offer 100% of protection.
As I already wrote in another post, I had a terrific experience ... after an intercourse with a TG met in a disco, I had my condom all covered by her blood (she just entered in her period), with the base of my d..k soak wet by her blood. Removing the condom I spread blood in my fingers and also in the middle of my d..k, not far from the prepuce. After 2 weeks I had swollen glands, fevers, joint pains... the symptoms and their timing perfectly matched those of a primary hiv infection. I spent terrible months waiting go across the "window period" and get a test. The most scaring experience of my life.
But if condom doesn't offer the 100% of protection, that's not a good reason to not wear it...  98-99, or whatever % of protection is better than a perfect 0%.

In my case, I am anxiously waiting for a vaccine to show up, and unless someone does not confirm that I would have developed efficient antibodies to hiv, I would always wear a condom.

I definitely agree with your last post, and that's why I believe that only a little knowledge of the matter let us to manage risks a little better.
Ignorance is the biggest risk factor...
Because you said you are in the business, I ask you again:
what efficiency percentage are you supposed to achieve before this vaccine should be available on public market?
Do you have the statistic percentage of efficiency for condoms?
What are the chances of taking Hiv having an unprotected sex session with a positive one?
For my own knowledge please.

Before the vaccine is released to the public the efficiency should be better than 85%. That is a relatively low efficiency since more conventional vaccines must be more than 98% efficient. But 85% efficiency for an AIDS vaccine is a pretty good start.
Condoms are a bit over 99% safe. Of course it depends a lot on how you use it....ie if you like wild and vigorous encounters and anal intercourse the risk might be higher; if you are a more gentle type and like to use good lubricants it is very safe...
There is no simple answer on the risk of getting AIDS from unprotected sex. First of all like with the condoms it depends what activities you enjoy and how you do them. The risk is higher if you have any cuts or bruises or sore spots that offer a chance for a more direct contact of the body fluids. As a healthy individual with no injuries (also on your partners side) and a not too wild intercourse the risk of getting infected is less than 1:100....for anal intercourse and wild and forceful penetration the risk is much higher...and if as a healthy individual you love to get a BBBJ the risk to contract AIDS from an infected partner is about the risk of being struck by lightning.

I don't belong to the VaxGen team. Thanks for sharing your experience; what a nightmare! By the way if you have antibodies against AIDS it just shows that you have been in contact with the virus and that means that most certainly you are infected with the HIV/AIDS virus. The HIV virus is smarter than our basic immune system with its antibodies - that's part of the reason why the development of an AIDS vaccine is so tricky and takes so much time.
