I just say "I am not on Holiday", some think I am cheap charlie and I just let them know I am not cheap and will certainly pay whats fair for both of us.
And you are correct about coming back a couple days later. a slow monday might find them very willing to go for a quick ST for 800 to 1000 + BF, and you can test the waters.
This following is a bit long but a good read:
When I lived in Thailand I always had a REGULAR. I found the beer bars to be the best for this. I would take the afternoon off work and have a regular maybe once or twice a month that knew I had Girlfriend (KEY, I made that clear from the get go), but she also knew if I was pulling her then that meant my GF was not in the same city as me (either our home in phuket or our apt in bkk).
I would be lying if I didnt confess writing this makes me feel a bit shitty about doing this as I am now married. But as I was saying.
Have a regular that is maybe a 7 or 8 and cool to hang out with, knows the game and wont jepordize your situation with texts or calls, and most important is great in the sack.
Example:
last year I had a very cool regular that worked in the beer bar at the entrance to Nana Plaza. When I was in BKK for meetings we would drink and go eat and she stopped asking for $$$ after the 2nd time (obviously I gave her $$, but she stopped asking). She was so cool I even brought my girlfriend into Nana one time when we were both in BKK and ran into this regular, and she couldnt of been cooler. She made me proud 
It was apparent to my GF that we knew one another and this regular was awesome. she immediatly came up to me and asked where my friend was.
My buddy was with me several times I pulled the regular and my GF knew he was a Butterfly, but she liked him more than most of my mates anyway. So, that settled that, my GF just thought it was one of my mates conquests and the three of us actually went to a bar and had a few drinks. The whole time my GF was insisting on me paying for everything.
the next time I saw the regular. I gave her a nice chunck of $$ for being sly, and she said she felt guilty because she really liked my GF.
My GF and I moved back to the states a couple months later, but on my next trip I will go see my friend. She was super cool, and a perfect regular in every way.
