Thanks for the website. It's definition of the " upper Middle Class " of $40-500,000 is quite a big range. I think the author is taking into other qualities of the individual and not just based soley on earning power. If we only look at the earning power, I definitely would not classify someone making $40,000. as being " upper middle class ".

The problem is that whilst many would agree with the principle sentiment (I don't disagree that we can pay too much sometimes), the way it has been argued has proved without any shadow of a doubt the following things.
1. people pay too much, but dont care, because they pay what they can afford, or feel they like to pay. Too much? up to the individual!
I have paid FAR too much sometimes, and I have had many freebies that were worth a fortune!
Thank goodness I have an enourmous disposable income, and dont have to worry about it! (haha, pick the bones out of that one, dickwad!)
2. the arguements were not mutually exclusive. I have a very large labido, thank you. I am not at all evious that you, LY, shag the cheapest whores possible on the eastern seaboard. Why should that make you a winner? better? am I envious? (I think not!)
The fact that we have pages of discourse about the subject is a credit to you, LY. Well done. You have kept the forum alive!
I still think you are a cheap guy, and I think we would have different tastes in virtually everything in life.

Nor would I, at least not in the US. But that does not make your original statement any less of a gross exaggeration, which I think is unnecessary to prove your point.
So apparently there are people who some would consider upper middle class who make $40K a year. And certainly most people (but perhaps not all) who make $50/hr (the bottom of the range I gave) would be considered upper middle class in the US. That is $100K per year, certainly enough to be upper middle class if the person chose to be. Only 3 or 4% of the adult population earn $100K or more.
If you want to go back to your original statement regarding those who make a few hundred dollars an hour, that is only going to be maybe 1/10 of 1% of the population. The total number of guys who fit in this category and who regularly partake in the Thai p4p nightlife is probably somewhere between 1 and 10, total!
Also, again I will point out that when making purchasing decisions you need to consider after tax income, which makes it even more of a stretch.
I don't mean to nitpick, but if both sides are going to exaggerate their claims to such a degree then no useful communication can take place.

As my realtor says, home prices are determined by 3 things; Location, Location, Location. I think determining what socio-economic group you reside in is determined the same way. I have been in some small USA towns where $40,000/year would buy you a pretty nice upper middle class lifestyle. In the US, it is all about location.. Where I live, a nice 3500 sq. foot brick home is about $300,000 on 1 acre of land. That same home can not even be found in SF or NYC for $1,000,000??? So who is further ahead or lives better, me on $120,000 salary or a Lawyer in SF/NYC at $250,000?? My house is paid for in 5 more years, when I will sell, pocket the $400,000 and move to Thailand to retire at 45 years old. I know I will then have a lifestyle better than 99.999% of Thai people. Wow, I'll be "Upper Class" for the first time in my life. That will make me feel so good about myself...

The lawyer. He lives in a decent apartment for $2K a month and saves twice as much money as you do for his retirement to Thailand.
But you're talking about two different things.
A guy in SF or NYC may not feel rich, heck maybe he can only buy a new mercedes every 5 years, whereas his neighbor buys one every other year. Or maybe he lives in a dinky $1M house that only has 2 bedrooms and doesn't have a pool. Poor guy.
But he still has far more disposable income and when he goes on vacation with the guy from Podunk, Iowa his money talks much louder.
