Dont count on the apartment thing or the disposable income. He probably lives in a $1M house with a $7k/mo mortgage payment. Probably has an ex-wife that got half his retirement and alimony/child support. I personally know someone who is in a similar situation, and has trouble paying for lunch because he is over his head so far. So much for the $250k/yr salary.
When the next housing bust hits the highly inflated markets of CA, he will be so upside down in equity, he may even have to sell the Beamer..
A lot of generalizations here and it all comes down to what makes you happy. Money Magazine has an excellent list of the "Best Places to Live" which takes many factors into account. I happen to live in one of their top 10 cities.

He could take the San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridge and bypass the bay bridge entirely. But, if he's filthy rich, then this person should be livin' in Atherton, and could just take 280 or 101 into the City!! ha ha ha!!
And your 10 minute drive in Thailand must be a couple of feet, since the traffic is so bad there!! The 2 hour commute atleast covers 60 plus miles, so at least the car will be moving at some point!! ha ha ha!!
The chances for the housing bust to hit in the bay area aer greater then hitting the lottery. The medium level houses... between 300K upwards of 1.5M are still increasing in price. The houses that have come down in price are the ones over 2M. Property in SF is a great investment.
As for places to live, I'm not sure I'd like to raise a family in Thailand. Retire... maybe??

I'm glad you enjoy where you live, that's what counts. And the more of you that are happy there makes it cheaper for me to live in NY and SF 
The "places to live" surveys are interesting, but rarely overlap with my preferences. E.g. they don't even consider the population of hot young asian girls wearing short skirts in the various cities. That's just a ridiculous oversight.

I agree. And with that in mind, in the U.S: LA, Silicon Valley, or Hawaii would be my preference for 'HOT" asian females in short skirts!! ha ha ha!!
