Here is another take on the story by my friend and first timer to BKK, who was also subjected to XXXL/AW. He writes....
I heard AW’s (XXXL) voice even before I walked into the bar that Friday night. I could hear him from the lobby declaiming ‘I’m on my 7th rewrite – or is it 8th? – that means I’m basically my publisher’s bitch, they own me.’ A short while after he introduced himself to me and told me the story I had already heard shouted across the bar, his two book deal, his many rewrites and how his publisher had send him here to research BK. In the brief moments he paused long enough to give me time to reply, I asked what the novel was about. He dodged the question with some specious remark about how ‘all fiction is fiction.’ I asked him who his publisher was. He dodged this question, too, saying ‘Let’s just say it’s the most right-wing nasty publisher you could think of.’
Having done his shtick with me, he repeated it more or less word for word – and at the same volume – to a chap sitting at the bar.
Later on in the evening he talked to FM. When FM asked AW what AW did, AW got shirty. He claimed that he had already talked to FM for 20 minutes. He most definitely had not.
FM asked the same question I had – what was the novel about? AW refused to say, and became rather belligerent about it. The conversation came to an end thereafter, with AW clearly in a huff. Soon after someone else told AW that FM was a writer, because AW swaggered up to FM and demanded to know what FM wrote about. FM declined to say on the basis that he had not been shouting all night about being a writer and the RT was not the place for such lifework discussions, and that in any case AW had not said anything about his novel. But at no time was FM condescending or arrogant about having published; he simply did not wish to discuss it.
AW again claimed to have talked to FM for 20 minutes, but when FM denied it once more AW became increasingly abusive, used profanity and claimed FM was a liar.
FM tried to keep the conversation civil for as long as reasonably possible, but AW was not interested in being civil, and began with the verbal abuse first. FM did not resort to verbal abuse but he did drop the social politeness, telling AW the obvious truth that, if he was on his 7th or 8th rewrite his novel must be poor quality. FM also said that by doing so many rewrites, AW had lost sight of his original vision. FM also made the point that if AW was here to do research it was an act of crass stupidity to announce he was a writer, since this would change the attitude of the people he was talking to. As a writer, research should be done quietly and unobtrusively, said FM.
These are all valid points.
AW’s response to this was a curious mix of outright abuse and humbleness; at one point he called FM c***, prick, asshole and so on; at another he asked ‘then advise me, tell me how to be a good writer?’ FM repeated his advice that AW needed to observe but not announce. AW then claimed FM was not giving him any advice; FM replied that he wanted to, but that AW was not listening.
From then on AW became more abusive, resorting to the rather clichéd sub-Hollywood line ‘Do you want to take it outside? I’m ready – come on, let’s go.’ He even did that Neo / Matrix ‘come on then’ gesture with his fingers. Not very imaginative. This was followed by various boastful threats of violence, such as, ‘If I really had a problem with you I’d have put you down a long time ago’ and so on. Then he called me a ‘sell out’ – or, in fact, ‘a f***ing Brit asshole sellout c***,’ I think. He then claimed not to have threatened FM with violence and not to have used the word ‘asshole.’
Soon after this he left, trailing curses behind him as he went.
A short while later I was at the Nana Hotel carpark and ran into AW again (so much of human life is on display at Nana, and to see nothing more than sleaze there is also a failure of the imagination). On seeing me he said, ‘It’s the British sell out c***,’ and then, seeing FM some distance away, ‘..and his asshole holier than thou c*** writer friend.’ I think he also made a few equally unimaginative remarks along the lines of Koolbreez’s ‘butt buddy’ comment. Ho-hum.
Then he bristled up to FM, cocky, swaggering, and jabbed a finger in his chest, ‘So, not so cocky now you’re on your own, huh, my friend?’ and suchlike macho bullshit. FM’s response was measured and non-provocative. Another expat we’d been talking to previously saw this incident, and clearly saw how aggressive AW was being and went off to call the cops. AW got off a few more curses at FM and then left.
But 20 minutes later or so he came back, again full of bravado, telling FM, ‘The tourist cops are coming now, so let’s do it, you start…’ (that is, inviting FM to throw the first punch.) FM did not rise to the bait, and suggested AW calm down and that they discuss the problem like adults. AW was not interested, and had a crack at me again – the same old ‘British sell-out c***’ routine. I asked him why he felt I was a sell-out; he was unable to articulate his reasons, just like he had been in the bar. To me this is a very clear demonstration that all he was capable of was abuse and aggression. He had no interest whatsoever in discussing matters rationally, despite FM and me inviting him to do so in perfectly level-headed terms.
Throughout the whole evening, from the first time I met him, he was unable to give any substance to anything he said whatsoever. All he could manage was some mostly unconvincing boasting (unconvincing because it is unlikely in the extreme any publisher would pay for an unproven author to travel around the world as AW claimed) and a large amount of abuse. And not even very creative or interesting abuse at that.
It was very clear to me that he wanted to be the big shot in the room and reacted violently to any person who was less than awe-struck by his ‘genius.’
As they say, empty vessels make most noise.

FM I hope this friend of your becomes a member of BTF.

Our Mr xxxl cannot simply exist as they seem to have things mixed up a little.
Mr xxxl must really be a scrawny little runt if he needed the protection from the other scrawny lanky aesthetically challenged Doc.

The fact he was a customer or not has nothing to do with it.
Fact is that this was a private matter and my opinion was that this doesn't belong on the board.

What you and I construe as private is obviously different. In fact if the dude had not challenged me in the street that would have been that.
But he took it 'outside' the confines of Toxic so I have also.
Strange he is so quiet though.
Being a writer I would have thought he
could not resist writing something here.

This one is done.
My last words to XXXL....I made you an offer in Toxic and on the street later, for me and my buddy to read 3 chapters of your material to give you an alternate viewpoint from that of your publisher and agent.
The offer still stands. AND we will keep all commentary TOTALLY between ourselves - 100%!
You can build on what happened on Friday night or you can let it eat at ya for a few years........but the only people who are ever gonna deal with you straight up, are other writers.
