New to this forum, spend 7 or 8 months in Asia last 3 years, first trip to PI. Will retire soon, hope to use BKK as my city base for two trips a year, do the malls hospitals stuff in BKK I am more at home with the expat's in Asia, now than old friends in Alaska.

Well, looks like I hold the record so far - came here in 1971 on a 3 year contract and been here ever since ... except for 4 years in West Africa in mid 1980. (NOT a good decision after Bangkok!).
Married to a definite non BG, own home and business; here for the duration now I guess!

I came out here on "gardening leave" at the beginning of January '98 (having also split from my wife, with the divorce being finalised a year or so later), returning home 3mths later for 4 months, and later for 6 mths. Have been back to UK twice since, the last time resulting in my decision to get my latest visa renewal done in Singapore.
Don't get me wrong - this is not Nobby Nofriends, who left UK to reinvent himself; In fact, only in Thailand have I really become myself and it has been a natural evolution, rather than a change (at least it seems to me, and those of my friends who have visited over the last few years).
I only found this forum about 6 days ago, and have been addicted to it since - its an amazing mix of the fresh, the unknowing through to the sage and experienced, with a nice line in humour underpinning most of it.
I'm very much a newbie to any kind of internet forum/chat so have yet to fully find my feet. Still its much like the way I feel about Thailand - I do know quite a lot, living and being interested to live, here, but there's oh! so much I do not know. Besides, things change all the time, and its great to have found a place to ask about simple practical things.
Thailand is a complicated country to live in, and anyone who stays here for any real length of time will realise that everyone makes footprints, even if they are not immediately visible. For myself, I like to retread paths that give me pleasure, and so attempt apply a "sustainable fun" (similar to sustainable growth, in the context of rainforests) attitude to my social life; Don't use it all at once, and don't forget others will follow.
For both (ie real and virtual living), I think Mr. Joe's got it about right per his signature - but how? I certainly don't always, but try to make sure that those are things that only impact me. What is, or what should be a sobering element to a forum such as this is that your comments and remarks will be up here for a long long time. That's not to say it will have personal comeback (the anonymity of this forum is fairly well safeguarded), but others may read and heed.
I've seen some great posts (funny, informative, enlightening, poignant) and some which, quite frankly, the forum doesn't deserve. I have some thoughts and remarks about that, which I don't know what to do with. Should I keep them to myself, or is there a thread I haven't found yet for unloading this?
I'll finish by saying I'm glad I came across this (ahem, metaphorically speaking) forum; I've done a number of posts in a short space of time, and suppose that this will ease off soon, with my just adding my twopen'orth as and when. Anyway, good to be here and hope that, in time, that thought may be reciprocated.
