I would still use a condom coz of all the other nasty's out there but would also get vaccinated. they should do that when kids get started in school just like all those vaccines I got when I started going to school. Only thing I hope is that they dont make it the rich mans vaccine and it's for everybody to have.

Wide Spectrum, fortunately the test showed that I don't have antibodies to HIV, which means I did not get the infection. Anyway, I heard that some team is working in a kind of vaccine based on antibodies. If I did not understand in a wrong way, during the first 2 weeks the virus is free to replicate itself at skyrocket speed, crossing immune barriers and reaching "hidden" areas unreachable to antivirals drugs. Only after two-four weeks the immune system will build antibodies and reduce the number of copies of virus... but... too late. And as you said, hiv is smarter than antibodies. The antibody-based vaccine purpose should (still if i understand correctly) act in way to give very hard life to the very first copies of virus as soon as they enter in the body of someone and try to infect him/her. The principle is similar to the PEP (post exposure profilax), where someone that was SURELY exposed to the virus attempts avoiding infection getting a massive load of antivirals for the first 3 weeks. Does in your opinion there is no chance for vaccines based on antibodies? I am really looking forward 4 the day we will get the good new. P.S. Sorry to everybody to be so "technical" but the subject is damned serious .

Quote: from Wide Spectrum on 1:53 am on July 12, 2003 Rezyek: Unfortunately it's not that easy. The first vaccines have been tested clinically with limited success and the first production center is on the drawing board and will be built in South Korea by Vaxgen. However until an efficient new vaccine has run through all the tests and regulatory compliance is achieved it will still take a couple of years...and until large production units are up and running so that enough of these vaccines are available will still take time (around 6 years). There are thousands of excellent people working flat out to achieve this target.
Thanks for your very clear and knowledgable answers. What about a cure for AIDS ... is there any chance of getting that in the near future?

It seems to me that there are million other reasons for using a condom other than the fear of HIV infection - as many people have mentioned before. The one that worries me the most is herpes virus (which can be contracted thru BBBJ and cunnilingus). Bacterial infections are afterall curable. Let's not forget the problem of pregnancy. So, given the vaccine is only 85% effective and the myriad other STDs and problems, I would always use a condom. Last, but not least, I've had couple of encounters where the girl was on the rag and either didn't know (whatever) or did not tell me. I was glad I was wrapped then.

Rubberhead We could go on and on and on about vaccine development...and I don't know your previous background and understanding....to cut it short look at the following web references; they give an excellent overview of vaccine approaches for AIDS http://www.niaid.nih.gov/daids/vaccine/default.htm and http://www.iavi.org/science/ just a remark regarding antibodies: No vaccine is based on antibodies; if an antigen (ie virus) infects the body the immune system will react by producing antibodies. These should attach to the antigen and neutralise it. This neutralisation is not enough; a complex "cell response" finally let's "killer cells" attack the antigen/antibody clusters and "kill" them. An effective vaccine must be able to provoke not only the production of antibodies (if possible "neutralising antibodies") BUT ALSO induce strong "Cell-Mediated Immunity". The immune system produces antibodies against HIV but in nearly all people these don't neutralise the virus. A standard HIV test just shows that you have such antibodies...and thus have been in contact with the virus. If people get a vaccine then most likely a standard AIDS test will give a positive result. Another target is that the AIDS vaccine prepares a person's immune system to block continuous infection and eliminate the virus, as is the case with vaccines against polio, mumps and measles. This could be an effective cure for AIDS. I'm really glad to hear that your AIDS test didn't belong to the positive things in your life...as it will still take some years to have an efficient prevention and cure

There ain't no f**king chance of a vaccine in the near future for AIDS/HIV. The disease is mutating as we sit here. A new form was announced on local news this evening. Always, always, ALWAYS wear a condum. Never leave home without it. Don't be a fool, vulcanize your tool. Does everyone get it? We are decades away from any real vaccine. DECADES.

Would I get the vaccine?....probably , even though the risk from BBBJ's is suposed to be minimal to reduce it even further would be a good idea and you never know when the little head will over rule the main brain if caught short of a condom.Hey we're only human. Would I still use a rubber? For sure I would...there are more things doing the rounds that I for one don't want.

Mook You might be a bit too pessimistic about the vaccines; we are maybe decades away from a 100% efficient one - but a vaccine with 85% efficiency will be available in less than a decade. About the condom I agree...let's do it like my nephew: When he was 19 years ho could book his first trip alone to Thailand - he asked me for my advice. My strongest advice to him was to put on a condom AT ALL TIMES... After he was back he wanted to tell me about his exciting experiences in amazing Thailand...but at first I wanted to reaffirm myself and I asked him: And...did you wear your condom everytime? The unexperienced but happy fellow told me proudly: YES, of course I had it on all the time....only for pissing and f***ing did I take it off

Wide Spectrum, thanks a lot for providing info ! Still I am a bit concerned about the use of condoms... You know, they can brake easily, especially those small ones in LOS. Moreover, I know too many people that think that little piece of rubber would protect them from anything... more than their own personal hygiene. Isn't it silly to wear a double condom and than to share tooth brush and razor blades ? Sure, condom is fine... but is not enough. And I am surprised that all the prevention campaign never mention this matter and just speak of the sexual factor. Are we sure that it is better to deal with it as a sexual disease instead of a disease that you can transmit also with sex?
