Tipping is NOT an Aussie custome, and I guess the habit spread to Thailand from the Yanks.
I usually tip the ones who are the actual driving force of the Thai economy,, the workers, the poor,, the maids from Isaan, the taxi drivers ( if they don't try the no meter bull-shit), the waiters / waitresses in local restaurants. Small but regular tips.
As stated I was raised in a country were tipping is NOT the norm,, but EXCEPTIONAL service deserves exceptions,,,being a good tip. ( a GOOD tip unlike LY's
little blue tip LOL )

Soapie girl 200-1000 B
oily girl 100-300 B on top of agreed amount
Go-go or FL 100-300 B on top of agreed amount
Mamasan 20-100 B
Bar bill 10-50 B
Hotel maid 10-30 B per day
Bell boy 10-40 B
Taxi 10-30 B
restaurant 20-200 B
foot massage 50-100 B

There's various good reasons for tipping, as well as tipping well, none of which guys who have no money would understand (though, I'm sure all of them would have not trouble accepting a tip).
While the reasons to give a tip are numerous, I can gladly shre in which cases I will *never* tip:
- when the persons asks for a tip, or opens their hand expecting one.
- when a girl within minutes, as to buy her a drink.
- when she asks to buy her friend a drink.
- when a tuk-tuk driver starts to hard sell me on other services.
- ditto for a taxi driver.
what do I tip:
- Bellboy, 50 Baht
- maids at hotel, upon checking out, all of my loose change (usually 2-300 Baht), with a note "for all your hard work cleaning my room" (I usually have it written by someone in Thai).
- for maids when I need special cleaning favors (50-100 Baht)
- taxi money, maximum 100 baht, for girl.
- massage (TTM) - 50 Baht
There's one exception to that taxi tips - when I take a regular taxi late night in front of Cowboy, after the taxi mafia wants 2-300 baht for a 50 baht fare - I grab a regular taxi, which turns on the meter, charges me 50 baht, and then give him 200 baht, just as a spite -- and I make sure my 'date' explains to him why he's getting a bigger tip than normal.

im not saying u should tip more, just wow......lol.
since when do the poor drive an economy, I could be wrong of course.
but I thought the bright, hard working busnit man, the bill gates type drive the world.
helli f the poor drove the economy we would all be poor..........lol.
no offense to the down trodden.and those with bad fortune.
im jsut amazed at what sum of you guys think.
i tipped my first foot lady 700 baht little knowing that was way over market even for superb job........lol. but what happens is that I wouldnt go back knowing she would expect that every time. she got lucky getting that big tip but unlucky in that she lost a customer who would repeat many a time if he only knew the market prices.
but im sure my 700 tip was equalized by the throngs who tip a dollar.......lol.
i think the guy who overpays is few and far between as many posts here seem to indicate...lol.

If the entire massage is just 200-300 Baht, why are you surprised at 50 Baht tip? This is without specials, regular massage. Ditto for foot massage.

Nobody I know of ever got rich simply by doing the right thing. f*** Bill Gates and the Justice Department that found his company guilty of anti-competitive practices before giving them a pat of the back and sending them on their way. I guess it's just too bad Europe's anti-competitive investigators actually have teeth and guts enough to use them, unlike my fellow bend-over-and-take-it Americans.

I wouldn't go so far - if Micro$oft were a German, French, or European corporation, they give them a pat and send them on their way...
A lot of what you consider 'teeth and guts' are sour grapes over the yanks being better than their own... (witness France and the anti-DRM laws they try to push through)
