I have a friend who's parents and thier 2 dogs were gased in thier camper van in spain.
They had pulled in to a layby for the night, got into bed and the next thing they knew was waking up in the late morning and everything of value had been stolen.
They called the police and were told they are not the first to get this done to them and that they should not have gone to sleep with any windows open.
This happend last summer, thankfully they have not had any reaction to what ever it was that knocked them out,

OK, this'll probably be removed pretty quickly because it's about 'drugs', but anyone who has ever played with chloroform will know that if you put it on a cloth/rag and put it very near or on your face... it burns. Quite nastily. Not Elephant Man-like scars, but badly enough. It's reputation as a knock-out drug is way over-rated. As an anaesthetic it needs to be applied in a quite specific way, i.e. dripped (over a period of time) onto a mask that is separate from but covering the mouth and nose.
In another life I worked with rocket propellants. Some propellants are nitro glycerin based. Nitro glycerin can be rapidily absorbed through ones skin. By just sniffing the vapors causes ones blood vessels to instantly expand, creating a rush of blood to the head causing severe headache and nausea. Very small quantitties can do this. Incidentally thats why they give people with heart problems nitro tablets. Nitro glycerin could have been the set up for the spiked orange juice.
Early in usage of nitro based propellants, It was noticed that the people that worked with nitro every day. Would go on vacation and during vacation would drop dead. The exposure to the nitro was preventing them from having a heart attack and once weaned from the nitro glycerin nature took it's course, with deadly effect.

If you dilute it too much it doesn't really have much effect. AFAIK it got it's reputation from films/novels. You know -- someone gets kidnapped by having a piece of cloth with some chloroform poured on it held on their face for five seconds. It just doesn't work like that and it'd burn your face too. I think (but don't know for certain) that the only 'knockout gas' type things that you can get unless you work for a government are as described by UKG. There is a history of people being knocked-out and robbed in France and Spain using the method he describes.

The idea of women being worried about taxi's is not confined to Thailand but is prevalent all over the world, In london for example my female friends won't get into a taxi unless it is licensed and the guys photo matches. Same same.
Mark C, from TPE's example we're not looking for a knockout substance just something that will cause some dizzyness. This combined with the heat and intensity of the confined space in the market plus the constant pushing, pulling and in your face questioning of the scammers and it would not take much to get anyone feeling sick and dizzy. I guess there must be a load of stuff out there capable as well as a lot of naturally occuring drug stuff from them there hills.

Well, I have been approached countless times while in Thailand with the old "Survey/win a prize" scam. Thankfully was forewarned so avoided that one. The one I did get caught in was in the Philipines. Was walking when a guy called and said hey, remember me, I was you driver. Being young and stupid (with a terrible memory) I believed him. Said he would give me a lift, knew a good bar with a show. Then had to stop at his "friend's" house. He started to play some cards with his friend, got me to play a hand. And could you believe it, I lost! Out of nowhere two big goons appear and tell me I better pay or else. Ended up paying something like $150. Lesson learned...painfully.

Let's remember it's not just the locals you have to beware of. Like the dirty guy who wanted to charge 2000 baht for the same girl you can pick up on Beach Rd for 500. Must worry about farangs just as much in LOS.
