I pay the going rate and don't quibble about it. (1000 st, 1500 lt; +500 for gogo; +addl 500 for high-end gogo; -500 for Pattaya)
There are others that differentiate themselves from the going-rate-paying masses by paying more, and probably experience better service because of it. And as a result, the going-rate-masses look like cheap charlies, while the shining white knights of cash look like dreamy prince charmings.
I can't say I like it. But my feelings on the matter are irrelevant. There's no way to prevent people from maximizing their own gain. This isn't some fanciful socialist paradise where we can successfully legislate the prices on goods. It's a capitalist economy - and if enough people are willing to pay more, then the price will go up.
And just to clarify:
It's not a matter of what I can pay. It's a matter of not wanting to pay too much. And in fact, part of the attraction is that it's so cheap to purchase sex with women that are, even at the low end, quite attractive.
What's cheap? I think in dollars. Cheap is related to those things that I pay for on a regular basis in the US. $33 for a tank of gas, or $38.50 + $12.50 for an evening of fun. (1500 + 500 baht)
Yeah, that's pretty cheap. But wait - that's $50 in total - plus drinks! That leading 5 makes me upset. But I pay it anyway, because I try not to do the math so long as I think the underlying components are cheap individually.

Been lurking the forum for the past couple of weeks as I wrap things up in the States for my extended stay in LOS. But couldn't resist the fun and games on this thread, lol!
BTW, surprised BigDUSA hasn't weighed in here, ha! BigD, where are ya, buddy? My guess, he's not angry and resentful like LY, and understands tam jai khun while sticking to his own rules. 
(I feel a flame coming on from LY  right about now.)
So to feed LY's anger, let's toss this gas on the fire: the ridiculous amounts of money bro's like myself spend on sponsorship. Man, oh man, we should have our heads examined. And what does it buy us? Nothing but an educated ex-BG who is happily finishing "skoon" this year, and who is happy as a clam (despite the usual dalliances on her/my part), and thinking about university next year. What a terrible waste of money, and what a disservice to the bro's in BKK! And what a disservice to her and her family.
Damn, I know I won't be safe on the street with her anymore, looking over my shoulder for those pissed Thais and expats. Oh sh_t, I just forgot, there are local Thai's who have, oh, about a million times more Baht than me, so I guess I don't have to worry, whew! And they won't have been spending it in Soi Cowboy.
Yep, we are the worst kind of dogs, those of us who spend these vast sums in Asia. And to think it's only us -- hell, I've never seen an Asian spend money on "face"... or maybe that's what all that hoopla was about with my Chinese associates in that karaokae bar in the 5 star hotel in Shanghai as they plunked down obscene amounts of cash while we drank and sang with the local lasses. Nah, couldn't have been, just stupid little me not understanding what cash means in their society.
Geez, don't want to steal the moral high ground here again, (where is sorapong when we need him most to straighten out this guy??) so I'll hit the "submit" button while I finish packing my things to be with my TGF next week.
BTW, an interesting side note to the comment in this thread about the girls using sms, etc. on the Bamboo Telegraph. I noticed in talking with my TGF that she is more than a little concerned about forums like this (turnabout is fair play). When she asks me how I know some of this stuff, I just reply, "internet has everything!" Her comment, "teelakja, I think you learn TOO much about Thai people." TJ, I think you've made some good points that are actually a basis for a reasonable discussion, unlike LYs jealous rants.
First, I think we agree that any attempt to lower prices by going on a crusade (e.g. haranguing other BkkTonite members) is futile. The market is way too big for us to make a real dent and we would only be hurting ourselves by fighting the trend.
Second, I totally understand the desire to not pay "too much." It is a natural human trait (one that I share) that we don't want to be ripped off by paying more than the next guy.
Third, I think we would probably also agree that it is offensive (at the least, inconsiderate and boorish) to directly outbid another customer. E.g. if I heard you negotiating with a cute gogo dancer for a ST at 1000B, I wouldn't think of stepping in and offering 2000. However, if she rejected you at 1000, I would have no problems offering her more, regardless of whatever the going rate may be.
Where I disagree is that you seem to imply that holding the line by paying the going rate is somehow noble and that the "white knights of cash" should feel guilty or something (I'm not quite sure what your insinuation was, but there was something there).
Whatever the going rate there are always going to be those who pay below (or try to), those who pay the going rate, and those who pay more. It may be that the girls are not ecstatic with your 1000B any more (which may have been more than they earned in a week in their previous job), once they've had a few customers give them 2000B. Most of the girls, however, realize that they are rarely going to get 2000B or more, which is why 1000B is the "going rate".
The problem with rigidly applying the "going rate" is that it doesn't take into account individual circumstances. I have no problem with a stunner thinking you are a cheap charlie for holding firm to 1000B. But if you are not an asshole about it, I don't think the average girl would.
Another problem with the "finite pussy" argument advocated by LY is that it is too simplistic, economically. The fact that I'm willing to pay 2000B doesn't mean that he will not be able to get that 1000B pussy anymore. It might just be the opposite.
First, the occasional free spender keeps many bars in business and girls available because they (we) are subsidizing your cheap pussy. If every punter bought only one beer and insisted on the minimum price the market would be much smaller.
Second, the size of the market is dynamic. If there are more of us willing to pay higher rates then there will be more girls (and higher quality girls) coming into the business. The average price might go up slightly, but given the higher volume there will still be plenty of cheap pussy left for you.
Finally, the whole "good sense" vs. "money" choice is ridiculous. If you have enough money it is definitely not "good sense" to spend extra time and effort in trying to save a few pennies. Those who think so are apparently both stupid and poor.
(Sorry TJ, this started out as a response to you and then I got sidetracked in arguing against the idiots who normally spout off on this topic.)

One additional thought.
Paying too much is totally relative. I'm sure many Thai guys are totally pissed that guys like LY are overpaying for Thai pussy and driving up prices for them and stealing the good girls out of the Thai brothels.
