Harold,, although I appreciate your words regarding "driving force",,,,, perhaps a better discription would be "engine room" of the economy.
All those poor Isaan people working hard for 90BHT a day sure make Thailand more competetive in the world market. Imagine if your 6,000BHT s/t girls where picking rice,, it would be maybe 5,000 BHT per kilo (although it would be almost certain to be better looking rice).
Others,, don't mistake my comments for any socialist ideals, I am a capitalist pig through and through but the efforts from the "engine room" must be appreciated, even if not equally rewarded.

I've been told numerous times by many regulars that I tip too much, too often and tend to ruin it for the average folks. I won’t mention any names here…lol With that said, here are my views:
MP: Don't go to them. I'll order in for room service, pay what I order, normally a Thai Massage 500-600bt and if the basic massage is good and I'm not in the mood for 'specials of the day' then I'll tip 100-200 and show her the door. If I decide to indulge in the 'special of the day/night', it's always agreed upon in advance and if she is OUTSTANDING and one I'll ask for again and again, then depending on her price 1000bt = 1000bt tip; 1500bt = 500bt tip and 2000bt = she better be a knockout and a top performer or I'll pass on the 'special' pack her bag for her and show her the door. If she’s a knockout, who knows what I’ll tip if she GREAT at her job!!!
Hotel Staff: Normally 20-50bt a day if the room is kept really clean or the equivalent at the end of my stay <20-50bt times the number of days stayed at hotel>. I buy Pizza for the staff, ice cream, etc if I can and I once threw a dinner party for the staff because they were so damn good at what they did, even though RTB tried to talk me out of it....lol
Restaurants: Always at least 10-15% and more depending on the service. I like good service so I have no problem tipping for it!!!
Gogo Bars: Dancer and one or two drinks = 100bt tip at the end if I don’t leave w/her
Waitress: normally an easy 10% of total bill, sometime more if they are good at their job and bring me what I ask the first time.
Taxi’s: Normally rounded up to the next 20 <i.e. 66bt would net the driver 80bt, etc.>
TGF for a few days to a week” Depends on the girl. I had a fun loving, smiling, always happy and joyful girl in Pattaya my last trip. Picked her up in a Disco night one and decided to keep her the entire 4 day stay <I broke my Normal never get the same lady twice in a trip rule>. Day two, I took her shopping to the 6 story mall, spent approximately 14,000bt on a bikini, slippers, 2 pair of pants, 2 pair of shorts, 6 dress shirts, a belt, 4 pair of socks and a 4000bt pair of Pink Puma Tennis Shoes <Barafish and Wowser almost died when I told them the cost of the shoes…well worth the price just to see Barafish’s face and watch the girl laugh her ass off over his expression.> I don’t remember the cost of the dinners, drinks, fruit, etc so I’ll just say that it was 5000bt for all of that. At the end of the stay, I gave her 10,000bt, kissed her on her cheek <remember I’m a Shy Guy and we were outside the hotel…lol> and waved good by as we drove off.
Waitress: Depends on how long I stay at the bar. Normally at least 100bt and/or 10% of the total bill.
All in all, I’m not very SHY with my money and I do like to have a great time. I don’t see it as over paying because I’ve been there, done that in so many different countries from the PI, Mexico, Korea, Singapore, Bahrain, England, Germany, France <ok, only a short weekend and probably won’t go back>, etc, etc, etc. I don’t change my ways depending on the country so why not keep it simple and stay the course. If I offend anyone by my tipping standards, please whisper in my ear and I’ll try and change my ways when I’m around you. If not…keep up or get the hell out of the way…Da Get Fresh Krew doesn’t take prisoners or accept slackers!!!

DEF Good show.
Oldtimer tips about the same as you; although I am a bit tighter with a bar girl until I am on at least the second date. In the massage place, 500 baht usually does the trick....but there I don't usually take FS.
Of course, tips are a good deal less upcountry.
Oldtimer's problem is that he has been around so long that he sometimes gets a bit confused. For example 50 baht in the late 60's would probably be equivalent to 500 today. When I wake up in the morning beside a lovely TG I sometimes have to clear my head and figure out which decade I am in before sending her on her way.
The other problem I have is getting confused between Thai and Japanese which lingos Oldtimer speaks equally badly. That's why dining with a TG who works in a Japanese club actually makes sense for me.

just a note for newbies. if u order out for a thai or oil massage dont expect a stunner to sho w up at your door. what youlll most likely get is one of bigusa 1k long time girls...lol.

DF, For the cost of the shoe's (4000b) you could have had 8 x ST's, 35 x buffet breakfast's and about 60 heineken's, 555. Good to see mate, and it was worth it to see the girl's face with excitment.
Wowser34 liked the shoe's as well and I thought for a moment that he was going to buy a pair for himself, 555.

Hard for me to comment on MP's these days, because I just don't use them anymore.
Hotel: Receptionists - usually buy at least 1 Lunch for all during each 5 or 6 day stay.
Room Maid - usually 40 Bt -average (some days if no change she may get 100)
Having said that I only ever stay @ TL and the Staff there treat me very well.
Hotels' "free" Tuk Tuk - between 50 - 100 Bt per trip Tip
Lady Drinks: way too mutt in most places.
Toxic - "My" girl likes the girls in Toxic, and we Never drink alone.
Last night, as well as the girls, I even bought a drink for the 2 "dodgy" looking characters who were sitting in the Reception area talking Business.
RTB looked like he needed a drink and I didn't know his friend, so just sent out a couple of Hienies to the table.
A short time later... (No, not that kind...) RTB introduced me to his friend.
BK, great to finally meet....LOL
My contributions to the Vetinarians of Issan have basically ceased as for quite a few months I have only been seeing 1 girl.
"My" girl is well remunerated, but not on Salary... (well not yet anyway...lol)
